The Ethereal Solidifier was a machine designed by Egon Spengler to turn ethereal entities into solid matter to facilitate their capture, in essence making wispy ghosts more real so they're easier to catch.[1] [2]
History
Egon Spengler and Winston Zeddemore worked on the Ethereal Solidifier into the late evening in a workroom located in the basement of the Firehouse. It was unfinished but Egon planned on completing and testing it the next morning. However, while the Ghostbusters slept, Slimer hid an overdue library book about fairy tales under the Solidifier. He accidentally flipped a switch on the underside and the machine powered on. It soon made content from several fairy tales a reality - "Hansel and Gretel," "Rumplestiltskin," "Alice in Wonderland," "Little Bo Peep," and "Jack and the Beanstalk."
When Slimer realized what happened, he took the book away and returned it. However, the manifestations kept coming. Slimer told the Ghostbusters the truth. Once the book was recovered, it was placed on top of the Solidifier and Egon reversed the wiring in the machine's back panel. [3] Once it powered on and reached critical phase, the Solidifier dematerialized all fairy tales it created that were still around.
Trivia
- On page nine of Ghostbusters Issue #14, the Solidifier makes a non-canon cameo as Egon's scanning device.
