Codex of Saint Theophilus[1] is a sealed manuscript that imprisoned the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse for 1000 years.
History[]
In the 980s, Saint Theophilus sealed the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse within the Codex with red wax and his ring seal.[2] The Codex was kept under the protection of the Monastery of Saint Theophilus for seven centuries.[3] On May 10, 1684, the Codex was lost during a raid by bandits.[4]
In the 1980s, the Codex resurfaced in New York City during a rare book auction held by Norteby's. The bidding started at $100 but Peter Venkman accidentally bought it for $1000. Janine Melnitz then broke the seal while out on lunch and the Four Horsemen wrecked havoc. Father Yanos arrived and told the Ghostbusters about the history of the Codex. While reading the Codex, he discovered the only way to defeat the ghosts was to seal them again.[5]

The Codex is an ancient leather-bound volume, sealed in red wax. The front cover features a Byzantine-style painting of Saint Theophilus.[6]
