Note: The surname O'Sullivan applies only to IDW Comics Canon.

The Archbishop[2] (also known as Mike and O'Sullivan (IDW Canon only)) was called in by the Mayor Lenny for advice on what the events following Gozer's appearance may mean.

History[]

Primary Canon[]

The Archbishop arrived at the Mayor's office after the Ghostbusters and Walter Peck. The Mayor immediately kissed the Archbishop's ring. Once the formalities were over, the Mayor asked what he should do. The Archbishop said that the Catholic Church would not give an official response, but noted that he considered the events to be a "sign from God." When Peter Venkman appealed to the Mayor's sensibilities and mentioned he could save lives of millions of registered voters, the Archbishop nodded in approval.

IDW Comics[]

Weeks after the Gozer incident, Rebecca Morales met with the Archbishop, Mike O'Sullivan, in his office to talk about the Ghostbusters for her book. He found the Ghostbusters to be an interesting group, to say the least. He talked about how he watched them talk a room of politicians into fast action and thought it was either the funniest thing he'd ever seen or an honest-to-God miracle. He admitted he caught himself wishing the Church had a little more of that kind of salesmanship in the pulpit.

Relationships[]

Lenny and the Archbishop being on a first name basis implies they are close friends and have been for some time.

Trivia[]

  • In the August 5, September 30, and October 7 drafts of the movie, the Archbishop is already present in the Mayor's office when the Ghostbusters arrive.
  • David Margulies credits Bill Murray for suggesting the first name basis between Mayor Lenny and the Archbishop.[3]
  • In Ghostbusters: The Supernatural Spectacular, the Archbishop's first name was Tim. [4]
  • Given that the Mayor addresses him as "Your Eminence" and that he wears a red zucchetto and red piping on his simar, the Archbishop is obviously a Cardinal of the Catholic Church (unsurprising, as nearly all archbishops of New York have been cardinals).
  • At around the 1 hour, 23 minute mark of the Preview Cut, included first in the 2022 Ghostbusters Ultimate Edition, after the Archbishop says the Church won't comment on the religious implications, he mentions people have been lining up in every church in New York to confess and take communion so they had to put on more priests.
  • On page two of Ghostbusters Year One Issue #1, in panel 1, the Archbishop's last name in the IDW canon is revealed to be O'Sullivan.

So he said, "You're Lenny. He's--" you know whatever his name was. Mike! Mike, see? And so a lot of that wonderful New York stuff, Bill loosened up the atmosphere and so the rest is sort of history."
