Not to be confused with Fire Commissioner from Ghostbusters II

The Fire Commissioner[1] (also known as John, Fire Captain, and Chief McGrory)[2] is the civilian administrator of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) as of 1984

History[]

Primary Canon History[]

Ghostbusters[]

During the Gozer incident, the Fire Commissioner was called to Mayor Lenny's office. He seemed deeply concerned by the events that took place when the Containment Unit was opened by Walter Peck. Completely contradicting Peck's wild accusations with quieter authority, the Commission firmly stated that the shutdown was no ordinary light show. In his career, he saw every kind of combustion known to man and didn't know what to make of Gozer's impending arrival. When Winston Zeddemore spoke before the Mayor, the Fire Commissioner had the most visible reaction to "shit that would turn you white."

Primary Canon (Expanded Universe) History[]

Ghostbusters II[]

When the Ghostbusters had arrived on the scene, he and the crew had been drilling for three hours. He noted to the Ghostbusters that the Titanic had arrived last night among other things. He was later seen in the crowd at the museum.

Trivia[]

  • The Fire Commissioner's first name is John, just like the actor who portrayed him.[3]
  • In the November 27, 1988 draft and February 27, 1989 draft, on page 109, the Fire Captain tells the Ghostbusters the crews have been trying to cut the slime shell for three hours. He tells them the Titanic arrived. Peter jokes better late than never.
  • The Fire Commissioner appears in the Ghostbusters II deleted scenes but as the Fire Captain in the script drafts in the same scene outside the Manhattan Museum of Art when the Ghostbusters arrive.
    • In addition, the helmet the Fire Captain wears in the Ghostbusters II deleted scenes indicates his rank is Deputy Assistant Chief.
  • Ray refers to the Fire Captain as "Chief McGrory" in the Ghostbusters II deleted scene We're Getting Nowhere. In the the first movie, Mayor Lenny called him "John." This would technically make his full name John McGrory.[4]
