Kani[2] was a giant crab-like monster the Ghostbusters fought at Tokyo Bay.

History[]

After the Ghostbusters vaporized Nori-ra at Tokyo Bay, Kani manifested near the shore. Like Nori-ra and Lizardo, it was created when toxic waste touched old monster movies and caused the monsters to become ghosts through a complex ectoplasmic chemical chain reaction.[3] Being much larger than Nori-ra, Egon Spengler had to quickly recalculate for size differential. It was destroyed when the Proton Streams were adjusted to a setting of 9000.[4]

Powers and Abilities[]

Kani is likely able to destroy things with its claws and crush things.

Trivia[]

  • Kani was not named in the episode itself.
  • "Kani" is Japanese for "crab".
  • According to Kenji, Kani was from "Lizardo and the Crab Monster From Space."[5]
    • There is a Toho kaiju named Ebirah who is also a large crustacean like Kani that have traded blows with the titular reptiles of their franchises. Kani being from outer space could be an allusion to several kaiju from space Godzilla has fought. These include: Gigan, Orga, Mechagodzilla I, Space Godzilla, Monster X/Keizer Ghidorah, and King Ghidorah.
  • In the script draft included in The Real Ghostbusters Complete Collection, the movie Kani is from is "Lizardo and the Space Monster." It was explained to be a radioactive mutant crab from Mars.[6][7]
  • On page 4 of Ghostbusters: Get Real Issue #4, Kani makes a non-canon cameo under the big billboard in a grab of the Ghostbusters battle with it at the beach shore.
