Lost Souls[1] appeared near the Nether Regions in the Place of Lost Souls. Egon Spengler hypothesized that the ghosts in the Place of Lost Souls were the worst of the lot because they were too terrible for anyone to see.[2]

The Place of Lost Souls and its inhabitants are located between the realm where the Sorta/Kinda Tree dwells and the Doomsday Door. All spirits must pass through the Place of Lost Souls and it is said no one alive ever came out of it in one piece.[3]
In the mid-1980s, the Ghostbusters were determined to shut the Doomsday Door and ventured into the Place of Lost Souls. They discovered it defied the normal laws of physics. But when the Lost Souls found them, the Ghostbusters made a strategic withdrawal and found the Doomsday Door.
