Parkview Psychiatric Hospital (also known as Parkview Hospital and Parkview Mental Hospital) is an insane asylum in New York City.

History[]

Primary Canon History[]

Ghostbusters II[]

When the Ghostbusters considered going to the newspapers with the Psychomagnotheric Slime story, Jack Hardemeyer had them committed. The Ghostbusters exclaimed as they were led through Parkview Psychiatric Hospital in straitjackets. Ray Stantz shouted, "It all comes back" was going to happen. Ray shouted they just wanted to help save the city, state, and world from danger. An orderly warned him. Jack spoke to a Psychiatric Doctor and lied that the Mayor wanted the Ghostbusters kept under strict observation for the next few days because they thought they were seriously disturbed and potentially dangerous. The doctor promised they would do whatever was necessary. Jack thanked him and left. Egon Spengler, Ray, Peter Venkman, and Winston Zeddemore talked to the Psychiatric Doctor in a room. They became exhausted from trying to explain the situation to the doctor over and over. Peter buried his face in his arms. The doctor smoked.

Ray repeated they believed the spirit of a 17th century Moldavian tyrant was alive and well in a painting at the Manhattan Museum of Art. The doctor was not convinced and asked them if there were any other paintings in the museum with bad spirits in them. Egon insisted he was wasting valuable time because Vigo was drawing strength from a Psychomagnotheric slime flow that had been collecting under the city. The doctor wanted them to tell him about the slime. Winston it was very potent stuff and they even made a toaster dance with it. The doctor thought he heard Winston say toaster. Winston also told him a bathtub tried to eat Peter's friend's baby. The doctor turned to Peter. Peter stated he thought Egon, Ray, and Winston were completely nuts. When the Mayor Lenny found out about this corrupt act, he had Jack fired and ordered his staff to get him the Ghostbusters. They were discharged soon after. Louis Tully quickly briefed them on the situation as they suited up on the walk out of the hospital.

Secondary Canon History[]

Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime[]

The Parkview Psychiatric Hospital was built in 1954, sponsored by the New York City government. It was built over the ancient burial tomb of Dumazu and a shard of the Relic of Nilhe was discovered by two construction workers. The shard was turned over to the American Museum of Natural History. During the 1989 New Year's holiday, Janosz Poha was committed and assigned to share a room with a current resident named Ismael McEnthol.

Years later, Janosz was released. He soon returned to Parkview and gave a stolen shard to Ismael. Ismael used its power to take over Parkview and its occupants. Ismael then turned over the shard to the junior team of the Ghostbusters when they arrived at Parkview, from following strong ectoplasmic readings from the Sedgewick Hotel. They later returned to Parkview with the reassembled Relic and fought a paranormal army, Ismael, and Dumazu.

IDW Comics[]

Janosz was committed to Parkview after the Vigo incident where he refused to paint at first. A few years later, Janosz began to paint again but his dosage of Thorazine was doubled. In late December, Janosz was visited by Idulnas and forced to serve him. They relocated to Janosz' cell and painting a summoning spell on wall in Gozerian Alphabet. The staff's attempts to paint over the spell proved futile. Each time, the spell would bleed through the new coat. Dr. Cleese heard about the New Ghostbusters' exploits in Central Park and scheduled a consultation with them to check out Janosz and his painting. Kylie Griffin took initial readings then went to Janosz' room to ask him about the spell. However, the return of the Ghostbusters prompted the spell to glow violently.

The power went out and the P.K.E. levels spiked. 10 minutes later, the two teams proceeded to Parkview and entered. The Collectors soon tried to recapture the Ghostbusters but were thwarted. Frustrated with their lack of progress, Idulnas took control of the Collectors. However, Janosz took back control of his body and changed the summoning spell so that the Collectors' target was now Idulnas.

Trivia[]

  • In the November 27, 1988 draft of Ghostbusters II, the guys were committed to Bellevue Hospital instead of Parkview Psychiatric Hospital.
    • On page 97, the Ghostbusters are in a padded cell in Bellevue Hospital talking to a psychiatrist.
    • On page 104, the woman with the fur coat is admitted to Bellevue. The zookeeper, Dock Supervisor and his assistant are already admitted.
    • On page 105, a patient in the room tells them his Labrador Retriever told him the world ends in 1997. Peter thinks Labradors are habitual liars. Egon points out the year 2000 is fiction based on a completely arbitrary calendar and people's willingness to believe predictions is what gives them power.
    • On page 106, Egon lays out Vigo's plan to inhabit a living human and Dana's psychic vulnerability to hostile entities was passed onto her baby. He thinks Janosz is the human link between Vigo and Dana. A patient claims he saw Hitler hanging around the Port Authority.
    • On page 107 to 108, Louis waits in the Bellevue lobby for the Ghostbusters. Louis tells Peter he had a tough time getting them released. Peter is shocked it was hard convincing them they're not crazy. Louis admits he just convinced them they're not dangerous. Louis then goes on about filling Ecto-2 with Super Unleaded for a better performance and they can either reimburse him or he can take it out of petty cash. They drive off. Louis says he'll meet them there.
  • In the February 27, 1989 draft:
    • On page 101 to 104, there is a scene of the Ghostbusters in the Parkview Psychiatric Hospital lounge area and Ray predicts "Shitstorm 2000" is about to begin. Winston wonders if the predictions about the world ending in the 90s was true. A patient in the room tells them his Labrador Retriever told him the world ends in 1997. Peter thinks Labradors are habitual liars. Louis pleads with his cousin Sherman Tully to help free the Ghostbusters but Sherman insists he's just a dermatologist at Parkview and can't. Louis reminds him he got him out of that bad tax shelter. Sherman remembers Louis got him in that bad tax shelter. Louis recalls he set him up with Diane Troxler. Sherman remembered that didn't pan out and he ended up giving Troxler free dermatology for a year.
    • On page 107, Sherman Tully reminds Louis he was promised a ride in the car for helping get the Ghostbusters released. Sherman starts a story about seeing his grandfather at the foot of his bed but the Ghostbusters drive away from Parkview leaving Louis and Sherman. Louis claims he lets them handle the little stuff.
  • The interiors were filmed at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Brentwood, California. The scene of the Ghostbusters and Louis leaving were shot at a side door service entrance at the Biltmore Hotel.[1]
  • Jack claims to be acting on the Mayor's behalf, but a Mayor's Office does not have the authority to commit an individual. In addition, three of the four Ghostbusters are doctors of psychology, making it unlikely the hospital would admit them without question.
  • Jack tells the Psychiatric Doctor the Ghostbusters are "seriously disturbed and potentially dangerous."
    • Pursuant to New York State Mental Hygiene Law section 9.27, an alleged mentally ill person may be involuntarily committed to a mental health facility if:
      • Two physicians agree and present certifications that the person has a mental illness for which care and treatment in a mental hospital is essential to his or her welfare,
      • The person's judgment is too impaired for him or her to understand the need for such care and treatment,
      • Or, as a result of his or her mental illness, the person poses a substantial threat of harm to self or others. "Substantial threat of harm" may encompass (i) the person's refusal or inability to meet his or her essential need for food, shelter, clothing or health care, or (ii) the person's history of dangerous conduct associated with noncompliance with mental health treatment programs.
    • Upon arrival at a mental health facility, a staff psychiatrist of any hospital, other than one of the two original certifying doctors, must examine and confirm that the person meets the involuntary standard. The patient may be held involuntarily for up to 60 days. The patient may be held involuntarily beyond 60 days if the hospital applies for a court order of retention and the court is satisfied the patient continues to meet the Involuntary Standard.
  • On page six of Ghostbusters Volume 1 Issue #4, Parkview is on Walter Peck's speed dial.
  • In Ghostbusters Volume 1 Issue #13, page 9, and Ghostbusters Volume 2 Issue #2, page 12, Parkview is referred to as the "New York State Psychiatric Institute" in captions but signage and dialogue reaffirmed it was Parkview.
  • On page 12 of Ghostbusters Volume 2 Issue #2, Janosz' room is revealed to be 410.
