Stay Puft Marshmallows are a fictional food in the Ghostbusters franchise. Their mascot is the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

Canonicity[]

Stay Puft Marshmallows in the Primary Canon is developed from Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters: Afterlife. In Ghostbusters: The Video Game (Realistic Versions), a Secondary Canon, Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II pre-date the game, Ghostbusters: Afterlife conflicts with the game. Stay Puft Marshmallows (prime) appears in the IDW Comic Series, a Secondary Canon, which follows Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II, also includes some elements from Ghostbusters: The Video Game (Realistic Versions) and Ghostbusters: The Video Game (Stylized Versions); as well as being canon to Tobin's Spirit Guide (Insight Editions). Stay Puft Marshmallows in The Real Ghostbusters, which follows Ghostbusters (1984) and later Ghostbusters II to an extent, is deemed a Tertiary Canon. Stay Puft Marshmallows appears in 88MPH Comics, which follows Ghostbusters (1984), is deemed a Tertiary Canon. Stay Puft Marshmallows is referenced in Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime video game, deemed a Tertiary Canon, follows Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II.

Primary Canon History[]

Before Ghostbusters (1984)[]

Some time during Ray Stantz's youth, he roasted Stay Puft Marshmallows at Camp Waconda and it remained his most fondest childhood memory.

Ghostbusters (1984)[]

In 1984, when Dana Barrett first encountered Zuul, her abandoned groceries included a bag of the marshmallows and some time later, a sign advertising them was seen on the side of a building near the Firehouse when the Storage facility exploded.

Before Ghostbusters: Afterlife[]

At some point in time, a Stay Puft Marshmallows mural was painted on the side of a building in Summerville next to the Summerville County Sheriff's Department.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife[]

In June of 2021, the night after releasing Vinz Clortho by accident, Gary Grooberson went at the local Walmart and got a Baskin-Robbins Jamoca ice cream and a bottle of blue velvet frosting. He walked past the shelves stocked with Stay Puft Marshmallows. Unbeknownst to him, a manifestation of Gozer took place. One of the 10 ounce bags started moving on the shelf like something was in it. Gary doubled back and stared at the bag. To his shock, a Mini-Puft tore a hole and came out of the bag. It yawned and rubbed its eyes. It saw Gary, smiled, and stepped forward but it fell off the bag and landed on its face. It bit Grooberson's finger then tons more Mini-Pufts emerged from the other bags. About two days later, Trevor Spengler drove Phoebe Spengler and Podcast in Ecto-1 to the Shandor Mining Company. He drove past the Stay Puft Marshmallows mural on the side of the building, now a liquor store.

After the Ghost of Christmas Past transports the Ghostbusters and Woodrow Wainwright Fraser III to Camp Waconda, they witness a young Ray with his parents roasting Stay Puft Marshmallows. Ray also appears to keep a bag on his nightstand in the Firehouse sleeping quarters. Some marshmallows are present in the apartment where Janine Melnitz's team's first bust took place. Dana also still keeps a bag in her kitchen.

Tertiarary Canon History[]

In 1994, before a doomed graduate college experiment, Ray consumed Stay Puft Marshmallows with Michael Draverhaven outside the John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Ghostusters: Deviations[]

In an alternate timeline in 1984, the Ghostbusters chose not to cross the streams. 31 days later, they agreed to help Gozer get back to its home dimension and thus lose its new Destructor Form. After they recruited Tempore Ruga to send Gozer back in time, the timeline corrected itself. The Ghostbusters returned to the Firehouse with Dana and Louis. Ray didn't know why but he admitted to having a powerful craving for Stay Puft Marshmallows. He asked if anyone wanted to roast some. Peter agreed to it.

Ghostbusters (1984) Trivia[]

  • The "Stays Puft, Even When Toasted" slogan for Stay Puft Marshmallows originated in the original script.[1]
  • An expanded version of the street near the Firehouse was rendered in matte painting form by Matthew Yuricich. This included the Stay Puft Marshmallows billboard.[2]
  • According to Michael Gross, at one point a Stay Puft Marshmallows spot was considered for either the ending or beginning of the Ghostbusters commercial. A cartoon Stay Puft Marshmallow Man would be dancing around like the Pillsbury Doughboy. It was deemed overkill and discarded.[3]
  • On the test prop:[4]
    • The "Stays Puft, Even When Toasted" slogan was on the front label.
    • The expiration date printed on the marshmallow bag was "February 12, 1984".
    • The dimensions of the prop is 30.5 cm x 16.75 cm x 5.25 cm (12" x 6 1/2" x 2").
    • The back of prop indicates the prop was originally a product was made by real life company Kidd & Company in Ligonier, Indiana, the self-styled marshmallow capital of the world.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife Trivia[]

  • Location manager Bruce Brownstein teased a close up photo of a package of Stay Puft Marshmallows on September 28, 2019.[5]
  • The Stay Puft Marshmallows bags used are loosely based on the the blue and white or red and white types sold by Campfire in 2021.
  • A 10 ounce bag of Stay Puft Marshmallows at Summerville's Walmart cost $1.20.
  • After leaving the sheriff's department, Ecto-1 turns and passes by a Stay Marshmallows mural on the side of a building.
    • This was filmed on Railway Street in Crossfield. The mural was on the side of A&B Liquor Store building across the street at 1202 Railway (Railway St. and Nanton Avenue).
    • The shot of Ecto-1 turning past the Stay Puft Marshmallows sign was a recreation of the shot of Ecto-1 leaving the Firehouse after the Ghostbusters got their first call, seen in Chapter 11: "We Got One!"[6]
    • The mural was actually a 20 foot concrete vinyl applied to the brick building using heat guns.[7]

    • On the second floor kitchenette counter is a bag of Stay Puft Marshmallows.
      • After Patch 1.3.0., the bag was removed temporarily due to a bug.
    • In the alley between the Firehouse and Ray's Occult Books is a Stay Puft Marshmallows advertisement like the one seen in the first movie and in Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
      • The graffiti under Stay Puft quotes Winston's line "What did you do, Ray?" in the first movie.
