The Vacuum Polarization Rings were a failed experiment conducted by Egon Spengler, Ray Stantz, Peter Venkman and Michael Draverhaven during graduate school in 1994.

History[]

A large set of rings were constructed from a special Neodymium-Iron-Boron alloy in Storage Room 4F. In theory, as they spun they could create a magnetic field that placed intense pressure on the space-time fabric. This would cause vacuum polarization at the quantum level and tear a hole in the dimensional barrier that separates the physical plane from the spirit world without setting off a chain reaction that would destroy the universe. The temporary opening would be large enough for Egon, Ray, Peter, and Michael to collect data through it. Michael overruled Egon and painted sacred Polynesian runes around the rings rather than a Babylonian geomatic formula. As Michael chanted, the outer circle channeled spiritual energy and stored it into the inner circle. While Ray manned the device, there was a fatal power build up and the rings exploded just as a tear was formed. Everyone but Michael were unharmed. Through an unexplained means, Michael was then able to hear the language of ghosts and was driven insane, nearly killing Ray in the process.
