Plot[]

Janine's phone rang just as she was taking off her heels and putting on tennis shoes. She answered and confirmed to the caller the Ghostbusters were serious. She listened, paused, and sat back down. The caller told her something she couldn't believe. She readied a pencil and asked for the address. She promised they would be totally discreet and thanked the caller. She grinned and hung up then yelled, "We got one!" She slammed down the alarm bell. The klaxon activated.

Everyone looked up. Ray realized it was a call. A snippet from "Cleanin' Up The Town" began to play. In the corner past the entrance to the sleeping quarters were three arcades: Missile Command, Star Castle, and Star Gazer. Ray ran to the pole in the foreground and went down first. Egon stood up and straightened his tie. He yelped then rushed to open his foot locker in the middle. He called out to Peter and Egon to come on. Ray kicked off his shoes and readied his flightsuit as Peter landed with a carton. Egon yelped as he slid down. Ray had his flightsuit half on from the waist down. The front doors started to open, and revealed the license plate, "ECTO-1." The headlights turned on. The roof lights and alarm turned on. Ecto-1 sped out of the Firehouse, took a left, then another left.

The camera held a close-up on the Sedgewick Hotel logo. Ecto-1 drove up to the Sedgewick Hotel and parked out in front, between two yellow taxi cabs. A man at the curb backed up. The camera held a close-up on the Ghostbusters logo on the door of Ecto-1. The doormen opened the doors. The Ghostbusters entered the lobby. People outside and passing them by inside stared and gawked at them. The hotel manager was on the right on the phone with his back to the Ghostbusters. Peter asked out loud if anybody saw a ghost. A beautiful woman passed by them. They all stared and smiled. The hotel manager walked up from behind them and thanked them for coming so quickly. Peter yelped in surprise. They walked together down the main hall. The hotel manager explained the guests were starting to ask questions and he was running out of excuses. Ray asked him if it happened before. The manager replied most of the original staff knew about the twelfth floor then clarified he meant "the disturbances." He recalled it had been quiet for years up until two weeks ago and it was never, ever this bad. Peter patted him on the left shoulder. Egon asked if he ever reported it to anyone. The manager was mortified at the prospect. Peter played along. Egon rolled his eyes. The manager added the owners did not even like the staff talking about it. The manager hoped they could take care of it quietly. Peter promised it was done. The manager emphasized it was to be done that night. Ray readied his Ecto Goggles off his belt and told him not to worry because they handled this kind of thing all the time. He placed the Ecto Goggles on his head. Egon, Peter, and Ray headed to the elevators. A man already waiting looked at them and asked what they were supposed to be. He ventured a guess they were some kind of a cosmonaut. Peter chuckled and explained they were exterminators who got brought in because somebody saw a cockroach up on the twelfth floor. The elevator doors on the left opened. The man remarked that had to be some cockroach. Peter warned him it could bite his head off. A man and woman stepped out of the elevator. They gawked at them. Peter and Egon walked in. Ray was about to then spun around and asked the man if he was going up. The man decided to take the next one. Ray backed into the elevator. It closed. The man put his cigar back in his mouth.

As the elevator went up, Ray sighed and realized they really haven't had a completely successful test of their equipment. Egon blamed himself. Peter echoed him. Ray remarked there was no sense worrying about it now. Peter dryly joked they were each wearing an unlicensed nuclear accelerator on his back. Ray, not realizing he was sarcastic, asked anyone to switch him on. Egon turned on a switch behind Ray. As it activated, Egon backed up, making Peter move aside from his spot.

The elevator dinged and the Ghostbusters exited onto the twelfth floor. Ray readied his particle thrower, looked around like a soldier, and motioned to them with his head. Peter walked out like normal. Egon switched on his particle thrower. They followed Peter in a line. A chambermaid entered the hall humming to herself. Ray and Egon turned, shouted, and blasted her cart with the proton streams. Peter yelled at them to hold their fire. She peered out from behind the cart and asked them what the hell they were you doing? Egon, Peter, then Ray all apologized to her as she gathered up her supplies off the floor. Peter turned around to them and remarked that was a successful test. Ray agreed and suggested they split up. Egon concurred. Peter also agreed and mused they could do more damage that way. They separated and headed down different corridors. Egon scanned around with his P.K.E. Meter.

Quotes[]

Janine: We got one!
[alarm]
Ray: I think we better split up.

Egon: Good idea.
Peter: Yeah, we can do more damage that way.

Ghostbusters (1984) Trivia[]

  • In the July 6, August 5, September 30, and October 7, 1983 drafts, the impetus for the Sedgewick Hotel to call the Ghostbusters is introduced as a honeymooning couple who encounters Slimer, then a yellow vapor, in their room, 1210. It was filmed but ended up as the Deleted Scene: Honeymooners.
    • In the July 6 draft only, on pages 43-44, while the Sedgewick Hotel Manager eats a sandwich at his desk in the basement, keys on the rack began to move on their own.
  • Ivan Reitman thought the bride and groom scene was one of the funniest sequences but ended up cutting it because it stopped the movie cold. It was one of the tougher decisions Reitman made.[1]
    • The bride and groom were played by Charles Levin and Wendy Goldman.[2]
  • In the July 6, 1983 draft, the Chinese takeout scene involves a second Proton Pack test:
    • On pages 41-42, Egon finished Proton Pack Mark II. This version is portable and has no plug like the Mark I. Egon assures them it is safe, it only shoots 12 feet and won't harm anything but ecto-plasm. He demonstrated use of the pack. It ended up shooting out over 25 feet, blasting a hole in the wall and knocking him over.
    • On page 47, Janine gets the call from the Hotel Manager, very close to what happens in the final film, and the Ghostbusters take off for the hotel. The "Urine-Yellow vapor" chases a maid and waiter in a hallway at the Sedgewick.
  • In the August 5, 1983 draft, the Chinese takeout scene is longer and includes Winston.
    • On page 40, Ray, Egon, Winston are eating Chinese take out. Winston still does not believe in the paranormal. Ray tells him about the Manse Turbulence in Pennsylvania. It involved major structural damage, multiple full head and torso manifestations, and ecto fluids.[3]
    • On page 41, Winston indicated it has been three weeks since he was hired and there hasn't been one call. Ray tells him data collected is pointing to the possibility of a massive dimensional rip like the Manse Turbulence or four fold crossover like the Tunguska blast.[4]
    • On page 42, Peter tells them about how Dana thinks she's someone named Zuul and is being chased by someone named "Gozer." The name "Gozer" sounds familiar to Egon but they get a call. They depart in an all black Ecto-1 and head up the West Side Highway.
  • In the September 30, 1983 draft, on page 40, Janine gets the call from the Sedgewick much like the movie but the guys suit up then take the pole downstairs and leave.
  • The "We Got One!" scene was filmed in the Los Angeles Firehouse.[5]
  • A snippet from "Cleanin' Up The Town" plays after Janine declares they got one.
  • The three arcades on the second floor are Missile Command, Star Castle, and Star Gazer.
  • Dan Aykroyd's original Ecto-1 was an all-black, rather sinister-looking machine with flashing white and purple strobe lights that gave it a strange, ultraviolet aura. While going through the script, the cinematographer László Kovács first pointed out the black design would be a problem since part of the movie would be shot at night.[6]
  • Sound designer Richard Beggs incorporated a modified leopard snarl played backwards in the Ecto-1's siren sound.[7]
  • At around the 32:34 mark of the Preview Cut, included first in the 2022 Ghostbusters Ultimate Edition, there is a bit more of Ecto-1 driving out of the Firehouse.
  • In the August 5, 1983 draft, on page 43, the Ghostbusters enter the hotel in matching blue futuristic jumpsuits with proton packs strapped to their backs, Nutrona wands clamped to their wrists, and brushed-metal, flip-down ecto-visors worn on the head like a welder's mask.[8] The Hotel Manager is accompanied by a Slavic maintenance man and a worried Bell Captain.
  • The hotel scene was planned to be shot in New York's Waldorf Astoria but the lobby was too small and would have cost too much, according to Joe Medjuck.[9]
  • The filming of the Sedgewick scenes, except the hallway and elevator, took place at the Biltmore Hotel, in Los Angeles, California.[10][11][12]
  • At around the 32:50 mark of the Preview Cut, Peter steps out of Ecto-1 outside the Sedgewick.
  • In the August 5, 1983 draft, the Hotel Manager admitted there was a previous disturbance involving Slimer when he first started working at the Sedgewick years ago.[13]
  • In the August 5, 1983 draft, the Man at Elevator speaks to Winston Zeddemore instead of Peter.[14]
  • While on the set, Peter's "It'll bite your head off" was inserted.[15]
  • The elevator and hallway sets were constructed on Stage 12 at The Burbank Studios.[16]
    • This was due to several reasons like difficulty setting up in the Biltmore's narrow hallways, the Biltmore's floor had a busy pattern and the walls were white which would have been harder on the effects crew, and concerns with damaging the hotel. John DeCuir purchased a "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" set from MGM and reconfigured it for the film crew.[17]
  • In the elevator, Ray laments they did not have a successful test of the equipment. In the July 6 and August 5, 1983 drafts, a test run was conducted when Egon Spengler plugged the Proton Pack prototype into an AC outlet in the Firehouse. The pack heated up to 550 degrees and the resulting surge melted the outlet then caused a downtown blackout.[18]
    • The widescale blackout idea was seemingly tweaked and reused in Ghostbusters II.
  • In the July 6, 1983 draft, on pages 48-54, the Ghostbusters immediately encounter the vapor upon exiting the elevator onto the 12th floor and capture it. Winston and Egon are on one side, Ray and Peter on the other. It slimes Peter a little bit. They all have "ecto-visors" and went into the ballroom chasing after it. They use their wands firing beams of energy forming a "trapezoidal configuration" to catch the vapor. Egon alerts them "Don't let 'em cross!!" After addressing reporters, they sing a jingle.
  • From early drafts to the final shooting script, the Ghostbusters were originally going to encounter a bellboy but during casting, it was changed to a chambermaid.[19]
  • Frances E. Nealy was told there would be "little" pyrotechnics placed on her cart. The scene when the chambermaid looked at the Ghostbuster and asked them, "What they hell are you doing?!" was really directed towards Thaine Morris and the effects team.[20]
  • When Peter quips they "can do more damage that way," the chambermaid is spraying the little flame with her water bottle.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife Trivia[]

  • Phoebe Spengler tells Podcast to "switch me on" like when Ray tells Egon in the Sedgewick Hotel elevator.
  • The shot of the garage door rising up and making the turn mirrors when the Ecto-1 drove out of the Firehouse to head to the Sedgewick Hotel in the first movie.

Ghostbusters: The Video Game Trivia[]

  • In Ghostbusters: The Video Game (Realistic Versions), during the Welcome to the Sedgewick level:
    • John O'Keefe eventually relents and lets the Ghostbusters finish up their work in the Sedgewick, but asks them to be discreet, just as the Hotel manager from the first film asked of them.
    • When the level starts, if you don't follow the team, the patrons in the hotel will say some familiar lines if you walk up to them. To the left, there are two people sitting in the waiting area. The man will first ask you if "you are some sort of exterminator." If you keep walking up to him, he'll then ask if "you are some sort of cosmonaut."
    • There is a similar elevator scene. Ray says that the maid put a restraining order on the team. As part of a settlement with the city, the Proton Packs must remain off in heavily populated public areas and in close quarters, which also satisfies the restraining order.
    • As soon as they step off the elevator, a bellboy nearly gets shot.

Though kept essentially intact through all the drafts, the vehicle concept -- suggesting a hearse rather more than an ambulance -- was clearly more in keeping with the darker tone of Aykroyd's first draft than with the lighter ones that followed it. Usually I am very loath to play things backward, because they have a very telltale characteristic and I think it's sort of a cop out. I played it backward and it did that err-reearr-err-reearr- the exact opposite of an animal going arghh. It lost some of its organic sound and it became this 'mechanical animal' claxon."

Joe Medjuck says: "We shot our hotel exteriors and the inside lobby scenes at the Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. That wasn't our original intent, though, primarily because we assumed from the start that we wouldn't be able to find a good location in L.A. So the plan was to shoot the hotel scenes during our location shoot in New York. One of the spots we considered was the Waldorf Astoria, but their lobby area was too small and it would have been very costly. The Biltmore ended up suiting our purposes very nicely. In fact, it's used a lot for filming because it's one of the few old style hotels left in Los Angeles, We found one of the advantages of shooting there was the the lobby is huge -- which, among other things, allowed Ivan to do a great tracking shot of the Ghostbusters entering the hotel, with Bill shouting out, 'Hey, anybody seen a ghost?'"

  17. Shay, Don (November 1985). Making Ghostbusters, p. 79 annotation. New York Zoetrope, New York NY USA, ISBN 0918432685. Michael Gross says: "All of the hallway scenes were shot on stage. We could have filmed them at the Biltmore, but there were several disadvantages to doing that. For one, it would have taken longer to shoot, since we would have had to go in there and get set up in some very narrow hallways. And for the effects people, the real hotel corridors would have created terrible problems. The Biltmore's floors had a very busy pattern on them; and the walls were all white, which would have made it almost impossible to generate a transparent ghost image. And, finally, we were concerned about damaging the hotel, which was real possibility. As it was, we could dump things on the carpet and burn up the walls without really worrying about it. Interestingly, the set had originally been built for Rich and Famous and was patterned after the Algonquin Hotel in New York. John DeCuir bought it from M-G-M and cleverly reconfigured it to our needs."
  18. Shay, Don (November 1985). Making Ghostbusters, p. 68 annotation. New York Zoetrope, New York NY USA, ISBN 0918432685. Paragraph reads: "In the July and August drafts, Spengler conducts an early demonstration of the experimental ghostbusting equipment for his comrades at the firehall. Since the self-contained unit is still under development, the existing prototype is plugged into an AC outlet. An audible surge of power runs from the wall socket along the extension cord to the power pack on Spengler's back. The pack heats up to 550 degrees and kicks the electrical surge back down the wire to the wall outlet which melts. At once, all the lights in the room black out. Compounding the gag, the action then cuts to an exterior of the firehouse as all the lights in and on the building go out, as does the street lamp and the stoplight at the corner. Then the action cuts once again to a long shot of downtown office buildings as they all black out in rapid succession, leaving dark silhouettes against the night sky."
  19. Shay, Don (November 1985). Making Ghostbusters, p. 71 annotation. New York Zoetrope, New York NY USA, ISBN 0590336843. Paragraph reads: "When cast, the Ghostbusters' first near-victim became a chambermaid rather than a bellboy."
  20. Thaine Morris (1999). Ghostbusters (1984) "SFX Team Featurette" (1999) (DVD ts. 12:04-12:17). Columbia Pictures. Thaine Morris says: "We told her 'We're going to put little pyrotechnics on the cart.' Operative word "little." It 'ploded pretty heavy. And that line she sticks her head out there around the corner... she's looking straight at us and she ain't happy."
