Ghostbusters IDW Ongoing Series

Ghostbusters IDW Ongoing Series is the American published comic series that started in September 2011.

The first volume ran for 16 issues from September 2011 to December 2012.

The second volume ran for 20 issues from February 2013 to September 2014. It continued in the form of 4 issue mini series starting with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Ghostbusters from October 2014 to January 2015.

A second 4 issue mini series titled Ghostbusters Get Real ran from June 2015 and ended in September 2015. A 48 page annual released on November 25, 2015.

The third volume under the title Ghostbusters International ran for 11 issues from January 27, 2016 to November 30, 2016.

A second 48 page annual released on February 1, 2017 and a six issue mini series titled Ghostbusters 101 started on March 22, 2017.

Pitch

Just before Ghostbusters: Infestation 2 was released on March 23, 2011, Erik Burnham was given the opportunity to pitch an ongoing series. The pitch included 16 issue's worth of Burnham's vision for the series.[7]

Eugene Visitor, Death being captured, and the Ghost Smashers were part of the pitch. The Ghost Smashers arc was originally going to be the third arc but Haunted America was done instead.[8]

Announcement

On March 30, 2011, an advertisement with art by Dan Schoening hinted at a new monthly comic book series starting in September 2011. The advertisement is an homage to the Ghostbusters' first commercial from Ghostbusters.[9]

On April 12, 2011, an advertisement revealed a monthly comic book series, its staff involved, and reiterated the start date in September 2011.[10][11]

On April 21, 2011, a teaser was released that previewed Cover A of Issue One.[12]

On September 7, 2012, an advertisement was released that teased the next arc slated to start later in the month. The image is a logo with a cartoon ghost in crosshairs. The 'Busters' in 'Ghostbusters' is crossed out.[13]

On October 16, 2012, an advertisement for February 2013 titled "The New Ghostbusters" was released. It stated the Ghostbusters were missing and promised an exciting new line-up. In the ad, behind Janine, are photographs of various characters that have appeared so far in the ongoing series.[14]

On November 9, 2012, more teaser images for "The New Ghostbusters" were released which revealed the line-up of replacements - Ron Alexander, Janine Melnitz, Kylie Griffin, and Agent Ortiz.[15][16]

On October 22, 2013, Tom Waltz posted a new teaser for 2014 titled "Mass Hysteria!" with arrow symbols prevalent in the image. [17]

On November 12, 2013, Tom Waltz posted a second teaser for "Mass Hysteria!", slated to begin in February 2014, depicting the Ghostbusters, Chicago Ghostbusters, and former Ghost Smashers battling a giant creature. [18] Ryan Lee later confirmed that was the cover he did for Volume 2 Issue #13. [19]

On January 28, 2014, IDW posted a third teaser for "Mass Hysteria!" depicting a reunion between Louis Tully and Dana Barrett with their shadows being those of Vinz Clortho and Zuul's respectively. [20]

On December 21, 2016, Tom Waltz tweeted "Ghostbusters 101" is just the tip of the iceberg and there big plans for Ghostbusters at IDW for 2017 and 2018. Multiple events are in the works. [21]

Continuity

Tom Waltz confirms this continuity and the series will also be in continuity to previous IDW issues. The series will take place after the events of Infestation.[22]

The continuity is also based on the two movies, Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II, and Ghostbusters: The Video Game.[23][24]

On October 2, 2011, Erik Burnham clarified the continuity at work for the series.[25]

  • The first two movies are definitely canon.
  • Burnham cherry-picked from Ghostbusters: The Video Game and fans should "Assume that the events from the game happened... unless you see me contradict them."

On October 30, 2011, Tristan Jones stated the series takes place roughly in 1994 but in general, a fictional mid-1990s. On March 2, 2012, Erik Burnham tweeted it is generally a "vague present" but "if it had to be tied to a specific year it'd be 1994-ish." [26][27]

On October 30, 2011, Tristan Jones hinted a character appearing in Issue #5 will help give solid verification that the ongoing comic is not in continuity with The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters.[28] This character turned out to be Kylie Griffin.

After Volume 2 Issue #20, the continuity will continue into a 4 issue mini-series crossover with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, starting in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Ghostbusters #1, and after that, the 4 issue mini-series crossover with The Real Ghostbusters starting in Ghostbusters: Get Real #1. The continuity continues into an annual, a Volume 3 of the ongoing titled Ghostbusters International, and a six issue mini-series crossover with the Answer the Call Ghostbusters, starting in Ghostbusters 101 #1.

In terms of the Tobin's Spirit Guide (Insight Editions)'s continuity, Burnham wrote it to function with the IDW Comics canon. As a result, some ghosts from The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters were tweaked in terms of their back story or just for certain logic to work in the movie/comic sensibility rather than the animation sensibility. Some ghosts that appear in the guide could also appear in an IDW comic in the near future like Samhain. The details about Samhain in the guide would be used by Burnham in the comic. Samhain was planned to appear in the International arc but there wasn't any more room as the writing went on. [29] [30]

Restrictions

Dana Barrett and Louis Tully were off-limits from being used in the comic.[31]

Relatives can't be invented and brought into the comic.[32] Peter's mother was in one of Erik Burnham's pitches. [33]

On November 16, 2013, it was revealed Louis Tully was no longer off-limits from being used and would be appearing the Mass Hysteria! arc. [34] The 30th anniversary was a selling point in getting Louis used during Mass Hysteria! in credit to Tom Waltz and Cindy at Sony. [35] Conditions came with using Louis Tully, there couldn't be a giant character change; like having three kids and being the governor of South Carolina. [36]

On June 26, 2016, during the Crossrip Podcast Episode 227, Erik Burnham revealed he also wasn't allowed to use Slimer like how he was utilized on The Real Ghostbusters. [37]

Trade Collections

On December 11, 2011, Erik Burnham elaborated that each trade collection will collect four issues. If sales does well, IDW is more likely to approve a longer storyline (and consequently longer trades).[38]

On January 4, 2012, Tristan Jones announced his PCOC material will be included in the trade collections.[39]

On April 18, 2012, Tom Waltz revealed the eight page short story pitched by Dan Schoening was moved from Volume Two to Volume Three.[40]

On August 17, 2012, as mused by Erik Burnham, it seems likely the eight page story will be shifted to Volume Four with the solicitation information for Volume Three released.[41]

Development

Production Process

From start to finish, when Erik Burnham starts writing the script to when Tom Waltz is finished and sends the comic to the printers, an issue takes about 5–6 weeks to be completed.[42] At times, they can be working as far in advance as two months/issues ahead.[43] Burnham spends a week or less to write the script.[44] Dan Schoening and Luis Delgado spend about 3.5 weeks on art.[45]

Script Updates

On July 5, 2011, Erik Burnham offered a status update on scripts: Issue #1 is done, #2 is done, approved, and being drawn, #3 is waiting on revision notes, and #4 is being generated.[46]

On November 21, 2011, Erik Burnham tweeted his daily work: "I have 5 pages to write, the next Ghostbusters arc plot to work on, some rewrites, and a short 200 word piece" and later [47]

On November 22, 2011, Erik Burnham replied the scripts up to Issue #6 are completely done.[48]

On June 14, 2012, Erik Burnham provided a script update. The story for Issues #13-15 is "pretty well set" and he is currently "mulling" #16.[49]

On June 16, 2012, Erik Burnham posted a peek at some Ghostbusters plotting.[50]

Approved Pitches

On June 29, 2012, Erik Burnham hinted he, Tristan Jones, Luis Delgado, and Dan Schoening would appear in a story soon. Burnham and Delgado will talk to Winston.[51]

On March 7, 2013, Erik Burnham, in a Crossing the Streams roundtable recorded in February, revealed he wrote an eight page Scoleri Brothers story but Dan Schoening simply hasn't had any time to draw it. The story was meant to be for the Volume 2 trade paperback.[52]

On May 28, 2013, Erik Burnham revealed the staff is still talking about doing the Scoleri Brothers story, but doing so would require chopping the original story in two and possibly making it infeasible. They are exploring all options. [53]

On May 31, 2013, during an interview with Cross the Streams, Dan Schoening hinted the Scoleri Brothers story answers questions and fills in holes from Ghostbusters II. [54]

On February 26, 2014, Erik Burnham revealed the Scoleri Brothers story was about where Winston was. [55]

On April 8, 2015, from an interview recorded prior, Erik Burnham and Dan Schoening revealed more about the 'Where Winston Was' back up story. It was done in 2011 around the time the team was waiting for the pick up on Volume 1 Issue #5. The set up would be reminiscent of Marvel Comics when the creators meet the characters. Erik Burnham and Luis Delgado would be taking notes from Winston about what happened in the courtroom. There would be a cutaway of Tristan Jones and Dan Schoening doing research and running away from ghosts. Winston then recounts what happened to him. He ran to Ecto-1 to get a Proton Pack but found the only one was stripped for parts. He returned inside and saw police officers with some of the Psychomagnotheric Slime. The ghost of Scoleri Brothers' mother would manifest and Winston had to deal with her. [56]

Not Approved Pitches

On April 11, 2013, Jones revealed he pitched a Ghostbusters annual featuring a John Tobin story that would be the thrust of the issue just like "The Man Who Sought Death" in Ghostbusters #8 and Dan Schoening, Luis Delgado, and Erik Burnham would tell a contemporary story alongside it, but the pitch was not greenlit. On August 14, 2014, Jones revealed the pitched annual would have expanded on Tobin's encounter with the Grundel, seen briefly in Volume 1 Issue #8. He also revealed a new pitch that involves trees, witchcraft, cults, and a life at stake. [58]

Story Ideas

On April 6, 2012, Erik Burnham revealed he had a story planned that dealt with Egon and Janine but the Haunted America arc developed. This story may appear at the end of the year.[59]

On September 16, 2012, in an interview with Guys With Pencils, Dan Schoening hinted he's still waiting for a chance to draw in the H2 Ghost.[60]

On November 12, 2012, Erik Burnham said "maybe in a backup, one day" there could be a story through the point of view of PCOC.[61]

On April 1, 2013, Erik Burnham revealed he was thinking about using a djinn for an upcoming arc.[62]

On August 21, 2013, Erik Burnham said there will probably be more Extreme Ghostbusters characters in the future. [63]

On January 27, 2014, Erik Evensen hinted he and Erik Burnham have ideas for more stories. [64]

On January 29, 2014, Erik Burnham implied the Bogeyman will be back. [65]

On January 30, 2014, Erik Burnham also hinted he and Erik Evensen would be working together again when their schedules line up. [66]

On March 3, 2015, Erik Burnham confirmed the Interspatial Teleportation Unit from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Ghostbusters would be addressed in Volume 3. [67]

On March 18, 2015, Erik Burnham hinted there are ideas about other competing companies like the Ghost Smashers. [68]

On April 20, 2015, in a posted interview, Tom Waltz hinted there are big plans for Janine, Kylie, and Melanie in future stories and hopes some more of the characters from Sanctum of Slime appear in the pages of the comic. [69]

On December 5, 2015, Erik Burnham revealed he promised Dan Schoening he would do a Krampus story set in Germany for Ghostbusters International next Christmas. [70]

On December 14, 2015, in an interview, Erik Burnham revealed at one time there was a story where in the Ray's Spirit Guide was helping as an act of good faith to get the Ghostbusters' trust then eventually their help. He may do the story some day. [71]

On June 8, 2016, Erik Burnham admitted he had an idea for a cameo of The Real Ghostbusters. [72]

On July 11, 2016, Erik Burnham teased he and Tom Waltz meet up at San Diego Comic Con and will think up some ideas for a possible sequel to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Ghostbusters mini-series. [73]

On January 19, 2017, in an interview, Tom Waltz teased after Ghostbusters 101 there is a possibility that "one of the major comic book events of the next few years will feature the Ghostbusters... lots and lots of Ghostbusters." [74]

Ghostbusters 101

On December 21, 2016, the March solicitations revealed a new six issue series titled "Ghostbusters 101" that centered on the original Ghostbusters going back to teaching but their first batch of students poke around in the Firehouse and set in motion the merging of their universe and the 2016 Movie universe. The two teams team up to make things right again. The 32 page first issue features variants by Tim Lattie and Erica Henderson, as well as retailer incentive variants with photo covers of both movie casts. The first regular cover has Peter Venkman, a new character, and Erin Gilbert with a map of New York City in the background with reference to Alnitak, Alnilam, and Mintaka of Orion's Belt. There will be six-interconnected covers by Dan Schoening and Luis Delgado. [75] Erik Burnham clarified the new character on the regular cover was not Roland Jackson. [76] Burnham mused he might have to rename the character since Dan Schoening chose to draw Roland. [77] The cover done by Tim Lattie was also revealed. Burnham commented it was a story requested by both the fans and Ghost Corps. [78] So far, 18 characters are involved in the series. [79] Ivan Reitman commented he always wanted to meld the two worlds and thinks it will be fun and thinks it will be important in the future to bring it back as a single universe. [80] Burnham confirmed the series would be six issues total. [81]

On December 22, 2016, Erik Burnham clarified it is a mini series. [82]

On January 9, 2017, Erica Henderson poster a teaser of a cover she was inking. [83]

On January 19, 2017, in an interview, it was revealed the bones of 101 were born during San Diego Comic Con 2016 between Erik Burnham and Tom Waltz. It was going to be a smaller story, with the guys straight-up teaching their trade in between busts. Ghost Corps suggested introducing the Answer The Call (ATC) cast to the multiverse. The title of the mini series was suggested by Waltz since it centers on students learning the basics of ghostbusting and the ATC cast learning more about other dimensions. The ATC team will both take it as a rude shock and a cause for relief. 101 starts with the students Ray has decided to start teaching and they're made aware of the interdimensional technology the Ghostbusters have been experimenting with. They decide to play with it themselves and that leads to the problem at hand. [84]

On January 20, 2017, Erik Burnham revealed he was written two issues of Ghostbusters 101 so far. [85]

On January 26, 2017, Tom Waltz posted an image of all six regular covers combined into one. [86]

On January 27, 2017, Dan Schoening revealed the 'end' of the combined covers revealed everyone was chasing after Slimer, Slimer (2016) and Lady Slimer in Ecto-1. [87]

On February 13, 2017, Erik Burnham wrote six pages of Ghostbusters. [88] Erica Henderson only did two covers total. [89]

On March 10, 2017, Erik Burnham revealed Ghost Corps asked for redesigns of the ATC team to stay away from actor likenesses. Dan Schoening provided a lot of versions with and without. [90] Schoening's first pass on Abby was almost exact. [91]

On March 15, 2017, Dan Schoening posted a Holtzmann WIP. [92]

On March 20, 2017, in an interview, Erik Burnham revealed the fourth student is Garrett Parker, son of one of Peter Venkman's old psych classmates. Cait, Zoe and Evan show newly arrived Garrett the Interspatial Teleportation Unit when something goes wrong and the dimensions of the Prime and ATC Ghostbusters starts to overlap. That's way too dangerous to be allowed to continue, and the two teams are looking to fix it, once they all meet. Burnham is currently writing Issue #4. [93]

On March 22, 2017, in an interview, Erik Burnham hinted an error in the teleportation unit's operation allows for an event that starts to cause another universe to drift. Dan Schoening admitted he didn't know who the antagonist was yet but hinted a ghost doesn't feel all herself like something is missing. Burnham hinted we may see the ATC team again in the future like with The Real Ghostbuster's Egon in Ghostbusters International. He also confirmed the ATC team will recognize the prime team as some people they met in the events of the 2016 movie and in fact just wrote that scene. [94]

Second Annual

On August 15, 2016, Erik Burnham revealed there are several pitched ideas for a second annual and they are shooting for it to come out in late 2016. [95] [96]

Volume Three

On August 2, 2014, Erik Burnham revealed the reason for the end of ongoing isn't sales related citing conversations at San Diego Comic Con 2014. Burnham also commented he and Dan Schoening will stick around and a Volume 3 might happen but it isn't set in stone yet. [97]

On August 5, 2014, in an interview, Tom Waltz hinted the events of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Ghostbusters mini-series will matter and will rear their heads in future stories of both franchises. [98]

On August 13, 2014, Tristan Jones revealed there is a vague chance that he might be writing and drawing a six (or so) issue miniseries in 2015. [99]

On November 11, 2014, Tom Waltz confirmed the recent news of Paul Feig rebooting Ghostbusters had nothing to do with the end of the ongoing series nor was it cancelled by Sony. Stopping the ongoing series was a decision made by IDW based on dwindling sales and timing. In terms of timing, Issue #20 was deemed a logical point to stop with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ghostbusters crossover taking place soon after. The crossover is also aimed to bring more attention to Ghostbusters comics. Waltz further stated other things are in the works and his ultimate goal is a Volume 3 of the ongoing series. [100]

On July 12, 2015, Erik Burnham announced there will be a Volume Three coming in 2016. Also returning will be Dan Schoening and Luis Delgado. [101]

On July 16, 2015, Erik Burnham revealed Volume Three is tentatively set to begin in Spring 2016 around April. [102]

On July 23, 2015, when asked about the use of witches, Erik Burnham hinted he "had an aim to do something for Volume 3", but the crew "went with another tack instead to start." [103]

On August 12, 2015, Erik Burnham stated there were no more crossovers plans for the near future. [104] He also hinted IDW is considering going to five issues per trade paperback. If it happens, he would start capping story arcs at five instead of four issues or, at most, where an arc would have a mid-point break. Sales and pre-orders are and always be a factor. [105]

On August 13, 2015, Erik Burnham revealed he initially pitched 'a year or so' worth of issues for Volume Three, with the first six months more specifically fleshed out. [106]

On October 9, 2015, a new series titled Ghostbusters International was announced. Erik Burnham confirmed it is the new ongoing series. The title might or might not revert back to just "Ghostbusters" like with Volume 2 in the case of it starting off being titled "New Ghostbusters." [107] [108] [109]

On November 16, 2015, Erik Burnham announced there will be back up content. They are "Haunted America" incident reports as written by Special Agent Melanie Ortiz based on Corin Howell's variant covers. [110]

On November 18, 2015, Erik Burnham confirmed Jenny Moran, Kylie Griffin, and Melanie Ortiz will be back in Volume 3. We might see Chicago again. He also corrected an error in solicits, it is Volume 3 of the ongoing series. It isn't a mini series. [111]

On December 14, 2015, in an interview, Erik Burnham clarified the Firehouse isn't going anywhere and the damage done from the battle with Proteus frees up Dan Schoening to redesign interiors at his discretion. [112] For the Haunted America back ups, Burnham mocked up an FBI Incident Report for Melanie Ortiz to fill out. He hopes to evolve the format. He also confirmed Ortiz will return to the main story proper. [113] Burnham has one new Ghostbuster in mind. He or she will be an original character and not taken from the cartoons or games. Any more new Ghostbusters would have to happen organically. [114]

On December 16, 2015, Dan Schoening noted the regular covers are inspired by travel posters. [115]

On December 29, 2015, Erik Burnham announced he and Tom Waltz put together some 'pretty crazy ideas' for Ghostbusters. [116]

On January 7, 2016, in an interview, Erik Burnham stated Volume 3 begins shortly after the events of the annual. The Firehouse is still being repaired so Janine set up shop in the Warehouse. The team taking on international cases will be a rotating cast. Potential locations that might appear in future stories include Japan, Iceland, Germany, Ireland, Russia, and India. Gabriel Rodriguez made a pretty good case for Chile. The cases could be for a scene, for an issue, or for several issues. For the first few issues, the team going abroad will be Winston, Peter, and Ray. [117]

On January 22, 2016, in an interview, Erik Burnham revealed he first wrote up and submitted notes and ideas for Ghostbusters International around April or May 2015. [118]

On January 26, 2016, Erik Burnham hinted he was writing about Paris in Ghostbusters. [119]

On April 22, 2016, in a podcast recorded earlier in the month, Erik Burnham confirmed the "International" subtitle would stay until the overarching story is done. The Chile idea is being saved for later because of how the story shaped up. Later this year, there will be a little surprise callback to Ghostbusters Get Real. [120]

On April 29, 2016, Erik Burnham stated the current storyline is basically a year long arc. [121]

On May 2, 2016, Erik Burnham confirmed Iceland after Paris and Ireland. [122]

On May 9, 2016, Erik Burnham reiterated there are no plans to recreate an alternate version of Extreme Ghostbusters in the IDW ongoing series. [123]

On June 26, 2016, during the Crossrip Podcast Episode 227, Erik Burnham hinted there is more dramatic material coming up in International. [124]

On September 23, 2016, Erik Burnham confirmed there would be more International after the second annual. [125]

On October 19, 2016, Erik Burnham hinted after the annual, there will be "stuff with me and stuff not." [126]

On October 26, 2016, Erik Burnham confirmed Issue #11 is the last issue of the International series but reaffirmed there will be more Ghostbusters after it, the Annual 2017 included. [127]

Annual

On July 12, 2015, Erik Burnham announced there will be in annual in Fall 2015 involving himself, Dan Schoening, Luis Delgado and guest creators. [128] Schoening added it would be around 48 pages. [129]

Mini Series

Ghostbusters Get Real

On March 9, 2015, Chris Ryall cryptically teased there would be news about the comic announced at WonderCon taking place April 3 to April 5. [130]

On March 13, 2015, Tom Waltz posted an obscured image of several Ghostbusters and Slimers, only saying more information will be revealed soon. [131]

On March 18, 2015, Erik Burnham posted an image combining all four Regular Covers. [132] Burnham noted to tell the characters apart, like Peter for example, he would use "Prime Peter" and "Real Peter" then hinted "Real Peter" has his favorite line in the mini series so far. [133] Burnham confirmed the mini series is canon and takes place some point after the TMNT/Ghostbusters crossover. [134] In an interview, Burnham hinted readers should rewatch "Janine Melnitz, Ghostbuster" for clues on the mini series. [135]

On April 8, 2015, from an interview recorded prior, Erik Burnham revealed the story in the mini-series was not the original idea for the crossover. He pitched a 48 page annual initially but Tom Waltz asked Burnham to make it into a four issue mini-series. The story takes place during "Janine Melnitz, Ghostbuster" in between when Proteus zaps the Ghostbusters outside of Rockefeller and when Janine sees them trapped in one of Proteus' mirrors. In the mini-series, the Real Ghostbusters end up in the IDW universe and think they're back home. They enter the Firehouse, go upstairs and run into the other Ghostbusters team. The story revolves on Proteus capturing the Real Ghostbusters and returning to that point in the animated episode. To sync the episode with the comic further, there is a page that takes dialogue from the episode. The idea for the four regular covers connecting into one image came about independently at the same time. Burnham and Waltz were talking about doing connected covers then Schoening, unaware of their plans, also proposed the idea. [136]

On April 20, 2015, in a posted interview, Tom Waltz teased there will be many fun cameos from throughout Ghostbusters lore. [137]

On July 16, 2015, Dan Schoening posted an unlettered panel with Slimer from The Real Ghostbusters. [138]

On July 23, 2015, Erik Burnham confirmed realities other than the ones with the Extreme Ghostbusters and Sanctum of Slime junior team will appear in the mini series. [139]

On August 12, 2015, Erik Burnham revealed Get Real was an idea considered in case the TMNT/Ghostbusters crossover wasn't greenlit. [140]

TMNT/Ghostbusters

On June 23, 2014, Tristan Jones summarized a Supanova Expo panel on Sunday where Chris Ryall hinted there will be some "pretty big news" regarding the Ghostbusters comics will be released at San Diego Comic Con 2014 next month. [141]

On July 15, 2014, IDW Publishing issued a press release revealing the new mini series in conjunction with both franchises' 30th anniversaries. [142] IDW's October checklist revealed there will be a variant cover by Kevin Eastman. [143]

On July 16, 2014, Bobby Curnow confirmed the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Ghostbusters mini-series is in canon, effectively continuing the current continuity from the ongoing series. [144]

On July 18, 2014, Erik Burnham reaffirmed this story is a continuation of the ongoing series' canon. [145]

On July 25, 2014, in an interview, Erik Burnham revealed Donatello has access to Fugitoid's inter-dimensional transporter plans and tries to build one for himself. He does and it works. It sends the Turtles to the right location in New York, but the wrong New York entirely. The four Turtles, Casey, April, the Ghostbusters, Janine Melnitz and Kylie Griffin will appear. There will be a cameo here and there. Tom Waltz has a plan for the "TMNT" series so he and Burnham mined the idea for the villain from that continuity. The villain is connected to another Turtles character and is trapped in a dimensional portal; when he's set free (in the Ghostbusters universe) and he has some decidedly ghost-like abilities. [146]

On August 5, 2014, in an interview, Tom Waltz and Erik Burnham provided some hints of what to expect in the mini-series: the Ghostbusters and TMNT will be put through the wringer, "a brand new villain from the TMNT’s ancient past," "classic super-team meet-up confusion," "some very geeky science talk" between Egon and Donatello, and a scene where Michelangelo sees Slimer for the first time. [147]

On August 15, 2014, in an interview, Erik Burnham expanded on working directly with Tom Waltz on the scripts. They got the plot hammered out, got input from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles editor Bobby Curnow, Burnham did the first draft, Waltz did a pass, and lastly Burnham makes any tweaks not related specifically Waltz and Curnow's threads for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ongoing series. Burnham cites he and Waltz came up with the idea of this crossover at San Diego Comic Con 2012 but were thinking about it in general for years. [148]

On August 27, 2014, Dan Schoening revealed he tweaked the designs of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles so that Raphael is the bulkiest, Michelangelo is smaller than the rest, and Donatello has a bigger cranium than the others. [149]

On October 30, 2011, Tristan Jones hinted a character, Kylie Griffin, appearing Issue #5 will appear again in the year one slate of comics. Given there is a year two and three, there will be future appearances of this character. There will be an Extreme Ghostbusters-esque situation, but more like the Rookie from The Video Game. Basically, there could be extra people around to help like Janine throwing on a jumpsuit in the Real Ghostbusters.[158]

On September 5, 2012, Erik Burnham tweeted "Plotting Ghostbusters future." [159]

On September 6, 2012, in an interview with Behind the Pages, Erik Burnham revealed another upcoming story he is plotting currently is not in the original 16 issue pitch.[160]

On October 3, 2012, Erik Burnham hinted the appearance of the Rookie was initially an attempt to seed one thing, but a new storyline in 2013 has changed that. [161]

On October 14, 2012, Erik Burnham teased that as part of some research for one of two stories starting off the series' run in 2013, he might have looked up The Real Ghostbusters. [162]

On November 12, 2012, Erik Burnham confirmed Jack Hardemeyer will appear in the comic soon as a member of PCOC. Ron Alexander will play as more of a jerk than Walter Peck but a techie like Egon. Kylie will be sort of a blend of Ray and Egon. Pagan was not originally planned to appear but will now make occasional cameos in panels. One of the ghosts will be based on mythology and another sort of based on one from The Real Ghostbusters. Janine is on the team because of Peck. Peck will explain "to a surly deputy mayor why Janine is completely indispensable." [172][173]

On November 14, 2012, IDW issued a press release that revealed the arc involves the Ghostbusters are kidnapped by demons from another dimension, leading to a new group to don the Proton Packs to deal with New York's supernatural problems and rescue their predecessors.[174] Burnham further hinted the story is split between new team and original team but with more focus on the new.[175]

On November 15, 2012, Erik Burnham clarified the New Ghostbusters would be wearing full jumpsuits in Issue #1, the shorts in #2, and jumpsuits in #3. The shorts is part of a gag about working in retail.[176]

On December 18, 2012, Erik Burnham hinted Idulnas is not working on behalf of Gozer and is trying to get revenge on his own behalf. He may or may not be as powerful enough to act directly anymore. Burnham also confirmed not to expect to see the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man or Gozer or anything else from the Gozerian pantheon. Dan Schoening "requested a riff on something" as the next threat.[177]

On January 4, 2013, Erik Burnham hinted he is considering using the core of the last story from his original pitch for volume two.[178]

On January 18, 2013, in an interview Erik Burnham revealed once the Ghostbusters return home there will be a "host of personal complications for the guys to deal with going forward." Melanie Ortiz is very Winston-like; she's from law enforcement and is the most on-point of the group. Janine is as unflappable as Venkman, will be compassionate, worries about the people she cares for, and, she's a rock. Kylie is the go-to for supernatural information and a mix of both Egon and Ray studying and recalling so much of the oddities of the world. Ron Alexanderwill be a mix of the technical sides of Egon and Ray—very clever with mechanical things, but he is still a jerk so he will be more of a love-to-hate character than Walter Peck ever was. The big difference from the original group will be they don't have the same humorous shorthand and charisma as the originals.[179]

On January 21, 2013, Erik Burnham revealed the Ghostbusters will return to New York before the end of the arc.[180]

On February 3, 2013, Erik Burnham hinted Volume Two will start off "jumping ahead in time" from the end of Issue #16.[181]

On February 12, 2013, in an interview, Erik Burnham hinted the characters who make up this replacement team will not all be leaving the book when the originals return to New York, set up the potential for a villain, and has planted the seeds for the originals to make more problems for themselves because of the solutions they choose — like that time Ray decided on the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man as the form of ultimate destruction.[182] In another interview, Burnham noted the task of protecting New York City is more forced on the replacements without much of a choice in the matter.[183]

On March 1, 2013, Erik Burnham teased Issue #3 and #4 each will have a panel "that is going to drop some jaws." [184]

On March 7, 2013, Erik Burnham, in a Crossing the Streams roundtable recorded in February, revealed the New Ghostbusters concept was conceived around September 2012.[185]

On March 8, 2013, Erik Burnham revealed when he was first writing Melanie Ortiz and Ron Alexander in Volume One, he had the intention of bringing them back but hadn't conceived the New Ghostbusters arc yet. At the time, Ron was going to think of another scheme and Melanie would be brought back just for fun since she had good chemistry with Peter. Jenny Moran was initially going to be the fourth New Ghostbusters but someone with tech experience was needed so she was cut.[186]

Issues #1-4 Back Up

On September 30, 2012, Erik Burnham hinted there are talks about a back up story that would start in February 2013.[187]

On November 13, 2012, Erik Burnham revealed the first arc of Volume Two ("The New Ghostbusters") will also have new backup feature taking the place of the PCOC files. The first 8 page story will be serialized in 2 pages per issue in the first arc. The story has been requested by fans and editors for a while now, with the Ghostbusters being indirect in this backup and "something from a ghost's POV" [188][189]

On November 14, 2012, IDW Publishing issued a press release that revealed the back up is an all-new Real Ghostbusters story written and drawn by Erik Burnham.[190] Burnham confirmed Slimer, Egon from The Real Ghostbusters, and "the whole nine" will appear. It will be "a fun little romp" following a ghost after it is stored in the Containment Unit.[191]

On November 16, 2012, Erik Burnham, in an interview, revealed the Real Ghostbusters story would also have the captured ghost "meet some familiar faces" in the Containment Unit.[192]

On January 4, 2013, Erik Burnham revealed Tristan Jones was offered the Real Ghostbusters back up first.[193]

On January 22, 2013, Erik Burnham posted an uncolored preview of Granny Gross from his Real Ghostbusters story.[194]

On March 24, 2013, Erik Burnham announced he just got some new pages in from Luis Delgado.[195]

Issues #5-8

On March 1, 2013, Erik Burnham also teased he and Dan Schoening have "crazy plans" for #5-8.[196]

On March 8, 2013, Erik Burnham revealed Kylie Griffin and Janine Melnitz would definitely appear in #5-8 Ghostbusting in a way.[197]

On March 13, 2013, Erik Burnham hinted #5-8 will involve Janine facing consequences from The New Ghostbusters Part 3, Kylie will, in no uncertain circumstances, be out 'Busting, Melanie will have gone back to New Mexico, but the FBI just won't be the same for her, and Ron was almost killed off but something else was decided with him. The arc will also feature Ghost Ships, the return of other characters, and drama for Winston.[198] Burnham later revealed an Egon-Janine-Roger story is in the works that takes place during the #5-8 arc.[199]

On March 29, 2013, in an interview posted, Erik Burnham revealed more on the arc. It will feature Egon trying to keep a ghost from abducting Janine's soul and Kylie will be hunting a ghost ship with Peter and Ray, amongst other things.[200]

On April 1, 2013, Erik Burnham revealed he is using the Gris-Gris from Volume 1, Issue #10 and initially the Janine and Ghost Ship plots were going to go back and forth between #5-8, but Tom Waltz and Burnham talked and it was decided to separate them into two two issue stories.[201]

On April 28, 2013, Erik Burnham revealed he initially planned to go back forth with the Egon-Jaine story, the Ghost Ship story, and other bits but Dan Schoening needed a break. The arc was then split into two arcs with Issues #5-6 and #7-8. To make it work out, Burnham had to "invent some new things to spackle beats together." The arcs will be two (mostly) separate stories. On May 15, 2013, Erik Burnham revealed Evan Shaner will be the main artist for Issues #7 and 8. Dan Schoening will do the back ups for those two issues then return as main artist with Issue #9 in October. [204] [205] [206]

Once he learned of the "City Fall" arc in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Burnham got the idea to do an 8 part Ghostbusters story. The arc will "bring in characters we haven't seen in the book before, a few nods to the past, every character who has worn a proton pack during our run, and to top it all off, a major change to the life of one of the boys" and has "an enemy that won’t be beaten by concentrating crossed proton streams in a single location" so "everyone who has ever worn a proton pack into the story to help." Burnham compares past arcs to the scope of a television show while Mass Hysteria! will be more of a movie event. [244]

On June 17, 2011, Tom Waltz hinted there will be a some Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime tie-ins.[266]

On June 29, 2011, Tristan Jones hinted at what to expect for a supporting cast on the series. Based on what he is privy to at the time, Jones notes "a pretty decent rotation of supporting cast members" and "as much emphasis on new characters as there will be from characters like Peck and the rest." [267]

On August 18, 2011, Erik Burnham tweeted Ray's spirit guide will be back.[268] In an interview with CBR, Burnham reveals plans on bringing in unofficial staffers to provide support in certain areas and also have cases outside of New York City, at least upstate or parts of New England. On April 18, 2012, Erik Burnham blogged about the second arc. He originally pitched it as a four part story arc: The Ghostbusters were to be joined by a group of supernatural debunkers, two men, two women, and a large dog who had their own reality TV show, based on the cast of Scooby-Doo. It was planned for that the ghost would possess the dog, enabling it to talk for a bit. The premise was abandoned after it was determined there would be too many characters to keep track of and serve at the cost of less focus on the Ghostbusters.[302]

On October 25, 2011, Erik Burnham mentioned he is considering inserting a story he hadn't planned on after a discussion with Tom Waltz. On December 29, 2011, Tristan Jones inquired about finding the Mattel 1:18 scale Ecto-1 an old tanker truck for model sourcing.[308][309]

On December 30, Tristan Jones also inquired about the Trendmasters Ecto-1.[310]

On January 1, 2012, Tristan Jones tweeted he is starting to work on a 24 page back up story for Ghostbusters. Jones will both write and draw. The story will be part of the regular series in place of the PCOC material and told in six page parts over a four issue event in mid-2012. The story has nothing to do with Tobin's Spirit Guide but if this story is successful, he will pitch something to do with that in a similar format to what this story will be.[311][312][313][314]

On January 7, 2012, Tristan Jones announced his search of models led to the purchase of two replica Ecto-1's, 1:43 and 1:18 scale, and a 1949 Peterbilt truck.[315]

On January 8, 2012, Tristan Jones posted his rendition of Dr. Peter Venkman, a teaser of what he will look like from Issue #9 and on (in Jones' backup story arc).[316][317] Jones then posted a test for Egon.[318]

On January 9, 2012, Tristan Jones posted a work in progress of Ray.[319]

On January 11, 2012, Tristan Jones posted his rendition of Dr. Egon Spengler, a teaser of what he will look like from Issue #9 and on (in Jones' back up story arc).[320]

On January 12, 2012, Tristan Jones posted his finished Dr. Venkman and a second Work in Progress and finished Dr. Ray Stantz. Jones hinted the Slime Blower may be used in the upcoming back up arc and Slime Tethering may be involved.[321][322][323][324][325][326]

On January 13, 2012, Erik Burnham revealed the arc will be a summer event and "four parts that will stand alone or together as adventures, hopefully." [327] Burnham also hinted the Ghostbusters will have a new vehicle to drive, currently being designed by Tristan Jones and Dan Schoening.[328][329]

On January 19, 2012, the staff revealed the four interlocking covers as one combined image. The guys are splitting up on a road trip across America with Ray in Seattle, Egon in Roswell, Peter in New Orleans, and Winston in Detroit.[330][331][332][333]

On January 20, 2012, All Star Comics Melbourne reported the main story involves some of the most bizarre cases of their careers under the orders of their new boss Walter Peck. Tristan Jones' arc will involve the Ghostbusters going up against a phantom truck driver as part of the event.[334]

On February 17, 2012, the May solicitations confirmed each issue from #9-12 contains a back-up Ghostbusters story by Tristan Jones titled "Who Killed Laura Parr?" and the Ghostbusters leave New York on the road for the first time in comics.[335]

On April 2, 2012, Tristan Jones posted a teaser for the "Who Killed Laura Parr?" story.[336]

On May 10, 2012, Tristan Jones revealed the Super Slammer Muon Trap will be seen in the "Who Killed Laura Parr?" stories as part of the Ecto-2. Jones also noted he removed dialogue from "Who Killed..." that explained that the all-in-one Proton Packs from Ghostbusters: The Video Game were too dangerous to use.[337]

On May 31, 2012, Erik Burnham announced he will be an unofficial promotion for the Haunted America arc. Burnham will draw 28 unique, hand-drawn postcards and hold contests to determine who will receive them. There will be seven per month and he may do more. Burnham later revealed the first three postcards.[338][339]

On June 2, 2012, Erik Burnham updated his promotion: 50 postcards given away from June 4 to 8. 10 postcards will be given away each day. Instructions will be posted on Burnham's Twitter account.[340][341]

On June 4, 2012, Erik Burnham posted a preview of two more postcards, featuring the Library ghost and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.[342]

On June 5, 2012, Erik Burnham posted four more postcards.[343]

On June 13, 2012, Tristan Jones posted a panel from the arc featuring Peter with a Mark I Slime Blower.[344]

On June 24, 2012, Tristan Jones revealed Laura Parr's license plate is the one from the movie "Cujo," Laura's car was going to be a Pinto but it had to be generic to bypass licensing issues so the design was changed and a joke was scrapped, and "Who Killed Laura Parr?" was going to be originally set during the road home after the Haunted America arc.[345]

On July 6, 2012, Tristan Jones tweeted he was done with pencils for "Who Killed Laura Parr?" [346]

Issues #13-15 Arc

On October 2, 2011, Erik Burnham hinted the fourth arc will directly address an Egon-Janine relationship.[347]

On June 15, 2012, Erik Burnham revealed the fourth arc will be a three parter followed by a done in one story.[348]

On June 23, 2012, Erik Burnham confirmed the fourth arc will address the rival ghostbusting team founded by Ron Alexander.[349]

On September 17, 2012, Erik Burnham revealed several weeks pass in this three part arc. By Issue #14 it will be fall.[350]

Back Up Material

On June 3, 2011, Tristan Jones revealed he will be working on supplemental material for each story. These supplements are in the form of files audited by Walter Peck, in his role as head of the Paranormal Contracts Oversight Commission (P.C.O.C.) from Ghostbusters: The Video Game. They include looking at the entities encountered throughout IDW's run (which includes everything before Infestation), staff profiles, equipment data, and so forth. It will also only be appearing in the individual issues for the time being. The very first file will feature something familiar to everyone. Jones also helped create some of the entities that will appear in the series. Jones' teaser has a photograph of one of the Poltergeists from Infestation #1 [351]

In the comments, Jones teases "P.C.O.C. was shut down after the Video Game, but then reinstated for VERY good reason, too..." [352] Jones' take on Peck is "he's not someone to mess with anymore. He knows that what the Ghostbusters do is legitimate and needs to be done, and after being possessed and used in The Video Game, he kinda wants to see to it that I doesn't happen again and that the world isn't brought to the brink if destruction through some petty oversight. Hopefully it comes across..." [353] He also has seen only seen two scripts and an overall story.[354]

On June 11, 2011, Tristan Jones posted a blog that explained he would be doing between 2-7 pages of supplemental material in the back of each issue. He reiterates, this material is exclusive to the single issues.[355]

On February 18, 2012, Tristan Jones made a Ghostbusters-related inquiry for help with Russian language.[356]

On August 18, 2012, Tristan Jones hinted starting with Issue #13 he will be doing "something else" and not returning to standard PCOC files.[357]

On September 17, 2012, Tristan Jones revealed Issue #16 will be "the last issue he works on for awhile (sans maybe covers or something)." [358]

On November 2, 2012, Tristan Jones announced Issue #15 would mark the last PCOC file and he would be doing something different for Issue #16.[359]

Volume One

On May 23, 2011, Chris Ryall, IDW Publishing's Publisher and Editor-in-Chief, blogged that the series' variant covers will be by Nick Runge and each cover will pay homage to classic album art. Issue One will be based on KISS' fourth album, "Destroyer." [360]

On May 25, 2011, Nick Runge blogged about the variant covers. He used photo references provided by Lisa Stevens and each will be hand painted acrylic pieces. Each variant cover will be an homage to a different music band, "with a nice, funny GB twist!" The team is based on Patrick Creel (Real Tampa Bay Ghostbusters), Ben Bond, Rob Pearson (Tampa Bay), and Ben King (UK GB).[361]

On June 11, 2011, Tristan Jones writes he will doing variant covers as of issue 3 and there is the possibility he will pencil a story sometime in the future.[362]

On August 25, 2011, Nick Runge revealed he will be using a new theme for his variant covers starting with Issue #5.[363]

On September 13, 2011, Tristan Jones tweeted he's working on another Ghostbusters cover and new designs.[364][365]

On December 12, 2011, Tristan Jones revealed he is working covers for Issues #9, 10, 11, and 12. He also read Issue #5 and the script for #6.[366]

On January 11, 2012, Erik Burnham tweeted Dan Schoening just turned in layouts for Issues #9-12 interlocking covers.[367]

On January 17, 2012, Erik Burnham tweeted the interlocking covers were done and colored. They were revealed to the staff the previous night.[368][369]

On January 20, 2012, All Star Comics Melbourne reported Issues #9-12 will feature variant covers, as well as specially personalised 1:50 sketch covers. [370]

On May 14, 2012, Tristan Jones revealed he will be doing covers for Issues #13, 14, and 15 based on some of the introduction title sequences from The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters.[377][378]

On October 10, 2012 Erik Burnham tweeted he got back the art for a new cover by Dan Schoening and Luis Delgado.[382]

Volume Two

On October 16, 2012, Erik Burnham tweeted he got thumbs for 2013's first batch of covers from Dan Schoening.[383]

On July 14, 2013, Dan Schoening posted a rough of unused covers for Volume One's Issues #2-7, 13, 14, and 16 and Volume Two's Issues #4, 6, and 7. [384]

San Diego Comic Con

2011

On July 15, 2011, it was revealed at San Diego Comic Con (July 21–24) this year at the IDW Publishing booth, #2643, there will be "interesting promotional material" dealing with the upcoming ongoing comic series.[385] On Saturday, the 23rd, Nick Runge will be at the booth from 2:00 to 3:00 P.M. for signing. Visitors will receive a free limited signing card.[386]

During San Diego Comic Con (July 21–24) 2011, Tom Waltz revealed one page of each issue will be dedicated to children's fan art.[387]

2012

On May 31, 2012, it was announced Erik Burnham, Luis Delgado, Tristan Jones, Dan Schoening, and Tom Waltz will be attending San Diego Comic Con (July 12–15).[388] They will be signing at the IDW Booth on Friday, July 13, at 6-7 pm.[389][390]

2013

On July 12, 2013, it was announced Erik Burnham, Luis Delgado, and Tom Waltz will be attending San Diego Comic Con (July 18-21). Burnham and Delgado will be signing at the IDW Booth on Friday, July 19, at 1-2 pm. Burnham will also be representing Ghostbusters at the IDW All-Ages Panel on Sunday, July 21, at 11am-12pm in Room 4. [391]
