Plot[]

The Statue of Liberty was back on Liberty Island. Mayor Lenny and a host of officials commemorated her return with a special ceremony with the Ghostbusters, Dana Barrett, Janine Melnitz and Louis Tully in attendance as honored guests. As the festivities began, the Ghostbusters reflected on their respective ancestors first coming to America. Egon's came from Ostrov in Eastern Poland and Ray's great-grandparents were Swiss and he still had photographs they took of the Statue of Liberty when they arrived. Peter Venkman recalled Ray's were after cheese or something. He then asked Winston Zeddemore who mused his ancestors weren't taking pictures from the slave ship as they arrived in Charleston Harbor. Winston turned to Dana Barrett and asked her. Peter chimed in and joked her family was around since the year 12. Dana corrected him, since 1620. Peter admitted he was little of everything - some Irish, some German, some French, Dutch - because the women in his family slept around. Dana scolded Peter for the last part. Peter reiterated it was a free country and he thanked the Statue of Liberty. Slimer flew out one of the observation windows of the Statue and towards the screen.

Trivia[]

  • In September 29, 1988 draft:
    • On page 109, weeks after the world is saved, a ceremony is held on Liberty Island.
    • On page 111, the Ghostbusters reflect on their ancestors seeing Ellis Island. Egon's grandparents came from Ostrov, Poland. Ray's great grandparents were Swiss and allegedly seeking 'other kinds of cheeses.' Peter's family was little bit of everything due to the Venkman women sleeping around. Lane thought it was a terrible thing to say. Peter quips it's a free country. It ends on a high shot of the Statue and New York City.
  • In November 27, 1988 draft and February 27, 1989 draft:
    • On page 129-130, the Liberty Island epilogue happens in full. They realize the torch is in the wrong hand.
      • In the February 27, 1989 Draft, the torch being in the wrong hand is discarded.
      • In the movie, some of the epilogue is seen in the credits. The rest is in this deleted scene.
    • On page 131, Slimer flies out of the Statue of Liberty's torch to the screen.
  • The first day of filming on Liberty Island was December 5, 1988.[1]
  • This was the only scene actually filmed on Liberty Island.
  • It is highly contested among fans that at the end of some cuts of the theatrical version of Ghostbusters II, Slimer comes out from behind the Statue of Liberty and flies right into the camera just like how he did at the end of the first movie. The VHS/DVD/Blu-ray versions omits this and just ends with a pan up to the statue's head then a fade to black.
    • This ending does appear in the November 27, 1988 and February 27, 1989 drafts.[2]
    • This ending does show up in a storyboard.
  • Mayor Lenny awards a Key to the City to the Ghostbusters. It is later seen with two others above Peter's office in Ghostbusters: The Video Game (Realistic Versions).
