"Back off man; I'm a scientist."

- Peter Venkman; Ghostbusters

Dr. Peter Venkman is one of the original Ghostbusters. He has doctorates in both psychology and parapsychology. He appears in all major forms of the Ghostbusters Franchise. He is arguably the leader of the Ghostbusters.

Personality

Peter is portrayed as the "lazy" Ghostbuster. He doesn't usually take his work seriously, has a dry sense of humour, and flirts with women, including clients such as Dana Barrett and Ilyssa Selwyn. While Peter is a scientist, he isn't as technically experienced or academically inclined as Egon and Ray, and also tends to be more aggressive when fighting ghosts.[1]

Peter also slacks off on experiments and usually focuses on women or other subjects, as in the first movie he is testing sixth senses and shocks the boy in the experiment for getting the answers wrong (even though he was really getting a majority of them right) and refuses to zap the pretty blonde (even though nearly all her answers were wrong). Peter is also a very outspoken person, as he back-talked to EPA representative Walter Peck and provoked him when the discussion shifted to the storage facility. This encounter led the Containment Unit being shut down and all the ghosts escaping over New York. Peter's fast-talking, however, "bargained" the percentage from the broker they consulted in mortgaging Ray's house (in order to lease the firehouse), as well getting their first payday of $5,000 made busting Slimer. His "gift of gab" also won over the mayor's judgment against Walter Peck.

Work at the University

While he was employed by the University, Dr. Venkman was not very interested in the paranormal research with which Dr. Spengler and Dr. Stantz were concerned. He was a scientist by trade, but didn't seem to identify himself as a scientist (unless he was trying to impress someone). His experimental methodology was highly criticized by Dean Yager, who told him in no uncertain terms that he was a "poor scientist." He admitted in the novelization of Ghostbusters II that even his high school grad class voted him "Most Likely to Become A Game Show Host". While at the university, Ray and Pete often shared the same bottle of apricot brandy in private and usually borrowed each other's videocassettes when documenting their findings for research.

Ghostbusters: The Video Game

Peter still maintains the smooth-talking slacker identity from the previous two movies, willing to jump at any chance to get out of doing work or going into a dangerous situation. He offers to take Marine Ecto-8 to avoid going onto Shandor Island. These attempts are transparent at best, prompting the other Ghostbusters to roll their eyes or glare at him.

Peter is still primarily motivated in his own best interests. He can be goaded into expending effort if an attractive female or a lucrative payoff is involved. But in the end he will still come around to doing the right thing when it's really important.

History

Ghostbusters

Peter Venkman was a professor working with Egon Spengler and Ray Stantz at Columbia University. The trio researched the supernatural but, unlike his partners, Peter wasn't really enthusiastic about the topic. Despite having a passing interest in ESP, he didn't believe in ghosts until witnessing one personally. The team of three discovered the Library ghost, but were unable to catch and show her off to the public. Subsequently, their funding was cut and they were fired from their university positions, though Peter seemed happy to look for new opportunities. After being fired, the three of them decided to build some advanced paranormal equipment and go into a career of freelance ghost catching.

Peter's first encounter with Slimer.

Peter encouraged and prodded Ray to mortgage his house in order to find the capital needed to purchase the Firehouse. Whether motivated by the prospect of becoming rich or just the fact that he no longer had to work under the thumb of the board of regents, Dr. Venkman was very motivated to begin a new career. Peter soon became the first to meet the company's first client, Dana Barrett and formed a romantic interest.

Dana had claimed that there were monsters in her fridge even though Peter could not find any such thing. After that incident, Peter, Egon, and Ray ate Chinese takeout for dinner at the Firehouse when their secretary Janine got a call. Peter wanted to use petty cash to take Dana on a date under the pretense of making overtures to keep her as a client. Ray informed him their dinner was the last of the petty cash. Peter was silent then told him to chew slower. Peter and his team went to the Sedgewick Hotel, where Peter came face to face with the ghost that would one day become known as Slimer. Peter was slimed during his first encounter with the ghost, which Ray greatly praised as "actual physical contact." Peter and his team eventually captured the ghost, which soon made them popular and busy around town with other ghosts.

Peter had stopped by at one of Dana's orchestra rehearsals. He happened upon her talking to a colleague who played in the orchestra with her and was interested in her as well. He asked her, "Who's the stiff?" She answered "The stiff happens to be one of the finest musicians in the world." Peter found some answers for Dana, but said they could find out more on another night. Peter continued to compliment and flirt confidently and, trying to keep down commotion, Dana reluctantly said, "I'll see you Thursday." He said, "We'll eat and read." As she walked away with her male colleague, he addressed her somewhat jealously, "So, who the hell is that?!" and Dana replied, "A friend. An old friend." She smiled because of Peter's constant compliments on her appearance which he was now making in front of her male colleague.

Not too long afterwards, Janine was overrun with calls and stressed out. She told Peter there was a man waiting in his office from the EPA and she had been working two weeks without a break and that he promised he would hire more help. He sarcastically praised her experiences in order to let her know that the door was open to discover more opportunities if she was unsatisfied working for him. As the phone rang once more, Peter replied to her, "Are you going to answer that?" Peter soon met an EPA representative named Walter Peck, who got angry that he refused to show him the storage facility.

Zuul breaks free

Dana, possessed by Zuul, floats above her bed

As Peter was on his way to see Dana and take her out on a date, he noticed that she had undergone a radical change and was now acting very strangely. She barred entrance to her apartment, asking him if he was "The Keymaster". After getting the door slammed in his face, he tricked her in order to gain entry. Once inside Dana referred to herself as Zuul, "The Gatekeeper" and told Peter she was awaiting the coming of Gozer, "The Destructor". Peter replied, "Oh..." and noticed slime seeping through the kitchen door and furniture. The possessed Dana quickly led Peter to the bedroom where she tried to seduce him asking him "Do you want this body?" which he rebuked asking if it was a trick question. The possessed Dana was unrelenting in her seduction, telling Peter "Take me now subcreature." Peter ignored her and Dana slammed him onto her bed, pouncing on him and pinning him to the bed with supernatural might. She passionately kissed him and rolled him over on top of her telling him "I want you inside me". Peter told her she already had two people inside her already. Peter proceeded to try to talk to the real Dana Barrett, ignoring her seductive advances in the process. While asking for Dana, an inhuman growling voice replied that "There is no Dana, only Zuul". Peter gave Zuul to the count of three to leave Dana's body to which she responded by turning her eyes white, thrashing her head back and forth on her bed then growling furiously like a beast at him and levitating above her bed. Peter, realizing the seriousness of Dana's condition, sedated her and called Egon to explain what was going on. He soon learned from Egon that her building was renovated by an evil architect named Ivo Shandor and she was being possessed by Zuul, the Gatekeeper of Gozer. After Peck returned and shut down the Containment Unit, the ghosts all escaped and Peter and the other Ghostbusters were imprisoned for EPA violations. Peter convinced Mayor Lenny that an apocalypse of "Biblical proportions," was coming to destroy the city.

GhostbustersdefeatingGozer

Peter and his team making their move to bring down Gozer

The Ghostbusters were released and drove to Dana's building, escorted there by a police and army motorcade as a dark cloud started to cover the entire city. After an earthquake struck, nearly trapping them in rubble, the Ghostbusters made it to the top of the building. However they were too late to stop Dana and Louis Tully from releasing Gozer and transforming into their possessors' Terror Dog forms. The Ghostbusters confronted Gozer, who electrocuted them before being zapped by the their Proton Packs, vanishing and returning in the form of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man (which Ray had been thinking of). Peter and his team then crossed their streams and forced the door to Gozer's dimension to close, destroying the Marshmallow Man in a blaze of flames and saving the city. Peter rescued Dana, no longer possessed, from the rubble of Zuul's charred body, finally winning her affections for saving her.

Ghostbusters II

Despite saving the town from Gozer, the Ghostbusters were put out of business due to being sued for all the damage that was done during the battle. Also, Peter and Dana's relationship faltered due to his fear of commitment and taking her for granted. She left for her male colleague in the orchestra, married him and had a child. He unexpectedly "ditched" her for an opportunity leaving her and his son behind.

In the years since, Egon described Peter (even to Dana) as being borderline(manic) until he eventually, "crossed the border." Peter became the host of a psychic reality talk show, The World of the Psychic, in the years after the Gozer battle. He and his teammates went to Dana's aid after she claimed her baby stroller rolled away from her by itself, and pinpointed there was "something brewing under the street," of First Avenue. Egon, Peter, and Ray start to dig under the surface of the road where Ray is lowered down into the hole where he discovers a River of Slime. The three Ghostbusters were summoned to court, where they stand trial on the grounds of violating a restraining order and destroying a section of First Avenue. They got back into business after the slime sample in the courtroom absorbed the judge's negative energy while shouting and exploded out two ghosts named the Scoleri Brothers. After the judge rescinded the order and dismissed the case(while under duress from the ghosts), the Ghostbusters were allowed to put on their equipment and bust the ghosts, declaring to the public afterwards that they were open for business once again. While his teammates investigate the river of slime underneath the city, Peter renewed his relationship with Dana, whose baby Oscar was being targeted by the ghost of Vigo the Carpathian. Even when paralyzed, Peter's tongue was still as sharp as ever and he still managed to provoke Vigo's ire with a variety of pointed insults, including referring to him as a "dumb blonde". Peter and his team in the end defeated Vigo and saved the city once again.

Peter displayed some initial distrust when Ray and Egon selected the newly hired Rookie, jealous that he got issued new equipment and a 'title'. However, upon Egon and Ray explaining to Peter that the equipment the Rookie is issued was "highly experimental and if not handled properly, could blow the user clear into New Jersey." Peter immediately lost interest in both the Rookie and his gear. Peter eventually warmed up to the Rookie and occasionally praised his developing skills, but his interest was soon lost once they encountered Ilyssa Selwyn who, true to himself, he took an instant liking to. Peter flirted with her, but she wasn't interested. At the end, he won her heart and shared a brief kiss with Ilyssa before she was slimed by Slimer.

Secondary Canon History

IDW Comic Series

Recognizing their interests and thinking a connection would be good, Peter introduced Ray and Egon to each other in college, which sparked a wealth of research.[2] Peter thought Parapsychology would be an easy second Ph.D to earn and enrolled. During his studies in Parapsychology, Peter wrote a paper on the theory of Werewolf Gladiators of Atlantis.[3] During graduate school, Egon witnessed Peter being punched out by a Norwegian flight attendant.[4] Ray's sister was concerned about her son, who wore his heart on his sleeve and seemed angry all the time, and asked Peter to talk to him. Peter ended up with a black eye.[5] Peter graduated with PhDs in Psychology and Paraspychology. After the Vigo incident, Peter and Dana were together for a time. But every time the Ghostbusters took down a major threat, the paparazzi would descend on them. Peter knew it wasn't good for Dana or Oscar but tried to do what was best. However, it turned into a thing. Peter and Dana broke up again.[6][7][8] After filming 33 episodes of The World of the Psychic, Peter had enough of nutcases and bodily fluids. The last straw was when Ira urinated on his pants during a commercial break. The three-stain clause in his contract was fulfilled and Peter quit.[9] It also didn't help that the coffee on set tasted like hot garbage.[10]

During a bust of Yakuza Ghosts and American mobster ghosts, Peter's soul was forcibly displaced when Fred possessed his body. Since he was no longer anchored to his body, Peter was shunted off to Purgatory. The other Ghostbusters rushed Peter's body back to the Firehouse. Egon found Peter was still breathing but his RK variances were flatlined due to his soul being missing. Fred took over Peter's body and slept with two prostitutes while Peter, himself, wandered Purgatory. Peter eventually allied himself with J. Edgar Hoover, Elliot Ness, and Jelly Bryce. Since Peter was never actually killed back in the real world, he was not constrained by whatever laws of celestial physics that bound everyone else. This cosmic loophole gave Peter super powers such as flight and incredible strength. Peter ripped two demons apart with his bare hands.

Peter managed to take back control of his body but was forced to battle a more powerful demon whom Fred's bosses made a deal with. In exchange for allowing the possessed Peter to enter Purgatory, the demon would have ownership of Peter to torture, dismember, and disembowel for all eternity. However, once the demon learned someone else was in control of Peter's body at the time of the deal, it decided to eat everyone. Peter blasted the demon while Winston trapped it. Without the demon, Peter asphyxiated. The Ghostbusters rushed him back to the real world and thanks to divine intervention from Angels, the Ghostbusters were restored back to normal.

When the Ghostbusters were attacked by Koza'Rai, Peter Venkman found himself a victim of chronological displacement and was now stuck in the Old West era, circa late 19th century. Peter noticed an unusual amount of ghosts and jury rigged a Containment Unit and Traps with what parts were available to him. He was hailed as a hero and his legend spread from town to town; that of his amorous conquests with women and taking on a dozen ghosts with one magic bullet (another says it was his icy stare). In Red River Valley, Peter trapped The Rudely Mallard Gang and bedded Josie Maye Landers. The next morning, he learned an emissary of the Demon Collective announced reinforcements, in the form of 100 demons, were set to arrive at midnight by train from Hell. Peter confronted the emissary at the Grand Palace Hotel & Saloon only to be saved by a stranger named Rachel Unglighter, armed with a modified Proton Pack. Together, they trapped the emissary and dispersed the Black Train.

The duo then set out to find the other Ghostbusters starting with Ray Stantz. Peter overloaded his Proton Pack and feigned loyalty in order to defeat the newly freed Morgan Le Fay during Ray's plan to rescue the kidnapped citizens of Camelot. In 2060, Peter saw through the Great Defender and found Egon. Once back in the present, they set out to stop Koza'Rai from turning Earth into a Netherworld. However, Peter felt betrayed when it was revealed Rachel wasn't a student of Egon's. In a final bid to save the world, Rachel kissed Peter and revealed her true origins. They toppled Stonehenge and caused all demons and ghosts to be pulled into the nether-realm. Rachel was among them. She and Peter said their good-byes.

While on his way to Las Vegas for Christmas, Peter cancelled his trip when he got word the millionaire Woodrow Wainwright Fraser III wanted to hire them. Peter was further intrigued when Fraser offered them a total of $4 million to capture two ghosts. However, greed got the best of Peter when he cut Janine and Winston out of the lucrative deal. Janine was paid time-and-a-half while Winston, not privy of what was going on until later, a $10,000 bonus. Eventually, Peter was all alone and he managed to realize the Ghost of Christmas Present was possessing Fraser the entire time. Upon wrangling him out of Fraser's body, the other two ghosts arrived with the other Ghostbusters.

On a Valentine's Day holiday, slow business prompted Peter to help Winston investigate the apartment room of Tiyah Clarke. By sweeping Tiyah off her feet, Peter discovered the ghost's protective nature. After the ghost of Ballard Wright dispersed, Peter took Anitra Day to a little corner bistro to talk about an interview with Psychology Monthly.

At an Independence Day Con, Peter and Winston were tasked with distracting D'Orka while Egon tried to get some help. Peter was forced to engage in humiliating negotiations with a group of cosplayers in order to borrow their Ghostbusters costumes.

The manifestation of the ghost of Sam Hain during a Halloween holiday prompted Artie Lester to offer the Ghostbusters $50,000. Peter was more than willing to oblige but Ray and Egon were aware of Lester's cutthroat reputation and refused. Sure enough, Lester attempted to record Janine's attempts to bust Hain and later exploit it for a profit. Luckily, the Ghostbusters were called in and Peter threw the recording into a portal straight to the Nether realms.

During a Thanksgiving case, Peter flirted with Stephanie Fairless, daughter of the man who hired them. Peter also managed to coax Mr. Fairless into revealing a clue about the entity they were facing.

When New York City was infested with Zombies, Peter and Janine mistakenly came up with a solution with both their Zombie and Poltergeist problem. The Poltergeist would possess the zombie, both would change on a molecular level. The Zombie could be safely dispersed and the Poltergeist could now be stored in the Containment Unit. Upon dispersing Stay Puft again, Peter was pleased with the prospect of doubling their fees from recapturing the Poltergeists and dealing with another uptick in supernatural activity from the reformation of Gozer's essence.

After cancelling an appointment with a woman named Marlene, who could use her mind to do things with a golf ball, Peter went with Winston to investigate an apartment complex on behalf of Alan Crendall. Peter was none too pleased the client was a child but things got worse when Peter discovered the entity at large was Slimer. An hour or two later, Peter got the jump on Slimer and trapped him.

While on the job at Fantastic Land, Peter forced Ray to tell him about Egon's latest research endeavor - a method of positively stimulating the cortex of the brain. However, once the Ghostbusters confronted the Hungry Manitou, Peter became a target because his soul exuded greed, desire, and want. The Manitou released its host, Scotty and possessed Peter. Peter's complete lack of fear intrigued the Manitou and he arranged for an audience in Peter's mind, at the center of his being which was a mental construct resembling the Paranormal Studies Laboratory at Weaver Hall. Peter realized the Manitou had ulterior motives, it became addicted to devouring souls of hosts were overcome with fear. Rather than stay and wait for Peter to let his guard down, the Manitou left his body to feed on another but was immediately trapped. However, Peter fell 20 feet onto pavement and cracked four ribs. After being admitted to a hospital, Peter also had to have an emergency appendectomy. Thanks to Egon's request for a full work-up to check for post-possession physiological changes, Peter discovered his health was excellent and faxed the records to Peck, rendering the new physical requirements met. A week later, Janine paid Peter a visit and dropped off a gift from Ray - a doll of Bruce the Fantastic Chimp, mascot of Fantastic Land. Peter was not pleased at all.

Among the four Ghostbusters, Peter was the least interested a cross country trip for out of state jobs. As far as he was concerned they had enough to do in New York and the point of hiring Rookies and franchising was to take care of the rest of states. During the Fort Wayne job, Peter drew the Fort Wayne Army ghosts near Ecto-1a by advertising "Ahgotcha Juice." When the time was right, Peter triggered eight Traps and caught the ghosts. He then cut into Winston's moment with Major-General Anthony Wayne. Ray consoled Winston by reminding him of the time Peter trapped Gandhi right before he could tell Ray the meaning of life. In early July, Peter separated from the others in New Mexico and went to Las Vegas to spend a couple days away from Ray. He got lost somewhere in Oregon and followed directions to take Devil's Bend through to Matheson and back on the Interstate but was unaware Devil's Bend was haunted by a Phantom Truck Driver. On the way, Peter gave a ride to a hitchhiker named Laura Parr. Soon enough, they were attacked by the entity but the Proton Pack had no effect on the truck it drove. Peter switched to a Slime Blower but discovered it was set on Slime Tether. Peter tried to dispense with the tether and ended up causing the demon's truck to flip over. Peter confined the ghost and ordered Laura to activate the Super Slammer Muon Trap. With the ghost trapped, Peter drove Laura to her home in Twin Ridges. After they arrived in Twin Ridges, Laura thanked Peter then vanished. Peter learned from Mrs. Parr that Laura died in an accident nearly 20 years ago.

Peter entered Washington state and briefly spoke to Ray when he reached Yakima. However, he was pulled over by Officer Foley for a speeding violation. Dante Barnes manifested near them. To Peter's surprise, when he shot Barnes, the Proton Streams passed through him. Peter tried to speed along his manifestation and insulted it with singing. Instead of the desired result, Barnes lit Peter on fire. Peter survived with a minor first degree burn and switched to an alternate uniform. After being treated by paramedics, Peter rejoined the other Ghostbusters and they eventually trapped Barnes. After learning from the Mayor of Seattle that the Ghostbusters were being charged for damaged trees, Peter threw his glass at a wall. He advised Egon they would price gouge the Mayor on the next trip and was simply happy to finally return to New York.

Months later, in February, Agent Ortiz came to New York partly to call in the dinner Peter owed her. On his day off, they went to dine at the Ritz Cafe in Central Park but a green demon that oddly looked like Peter manifested. Peter was grabbed and forced into the demon's chest. He yelled out to Ortiz to find Egon and warn him. The demon and Peter vanished. Some time later, Peter awoke on another plane with the other three Ghostbusters. After escaping limbo and dealing with the Collectors, Peter went out on a case to Mamaroneck with Kylie. When Kylie tried to leverage more pay, Peter reminded her he was privy to the fact she hired a functional illiterate to watch over Ray's Occult. Peter was nonchalant about the threat posed by the Phantom Train Conductor and retrieved the Proton Bazooka from Ecto-1a. Upon blowing up the ghost's train construct, Peter and Kylie easily trapped him. Peter considered not telling Egon he was the first to use the bazooka but when Kylie asked for 50% of the cut, Peter concluded Egon could use a little heart break.

Later in the summer, Peter got a call on his cell phone from Walter Peck. After some talking, Peter agreed to take the Marine Ecto-8 and deal with the John Milton. Peter returned to the Firehouse but Egon was too busy analyzing himself. Peter called up Ray to check on the Ecto-8 then went to Ray's Occult to recruit Kylie for the bust. After a few hours, the trio boarded the John Milton despite Peter's misgivings. They were surrounded by the Crew of John Milton. Peter was further incensed when Kylie shot the floor under them and they fell below into an ice cavern. Despite being confronted by a giant ghost, Francis Harding, Peter wrote him off as a typical teenager and proceeded to antagonize him. Incidentally, this led Francis to separate himself from the ship construct and allow the three to shoot him. Peter was alarmed trapping him was still a bad idea but luckily, Francis' connection to the Milton was so strong that even being trapped didn't sever it. While Kylie and Ray figured out a way to exit the cavern, Peter went over Kylie's notes and concluded Francis was merely searching for his father. Peter and Ray then took a flight to Vineyard Haven where Captain Harding's body was interred. Francis was released and upon seeing the grave, became content and peacefully dispersed.

While "discussing" the ongoing issue of Blood Rain with Peck, Peter received a phone call from Dana, who was possessed by Aetil. Peter quickly took the Ecto-5 straight to Dana's apartment but he couldn't gain entry into the building. The others soon caught up to him and they were greeted by a possessed Louis and Dana. Peter proceeded into the building without much of a plan and was flung to the floor after he called down the elevator. He wasn't fazed by the sudden appearance of future versions of himself and the other original Ghostbusters. Annoyed by their cryptic advice for dealing with Tiamat, Peter shoved past them and pressed forward. Upon reaching the roof exit, Peter stopped and gave a pep talk to the others then advised Egon to lay off the Twinkies. Brushing off their mind games with quips, Peter wasn't impressed with the Terror Birds, in possession of Dana and Louis, but was blasted by Dana. After chastising Ron for jinxing the fight, Peter directed everyone to cross the streams on Tiamat.

Back at the Firehouse, after the Hart Island incident, Peter noticed new scorch marks on Vigo's head and promised to paint in a pastel beret. After he headed upstairs, Peter had a moment alone with Dana. He dropped the small talk and chided her for not coming to him for help. On August 29, Peter and Kylie helped Melanie deal with a manifestation of Ghost Alligators at the St. Augustine Lighthouse in Florida. A few months later, the Ghostbusters were on the trail of another Class 7. Once they made a new entrance into the Emmanuel Baptist Church, Peter relished the thought of avoiding another lawsuit but was annoyed to see a bunch of "some kinda Kung Fu Martians" along with the potential Class 7, Chi-You. Peter was dismayed with how fast Egon and Ray picked up on Donatello's expertise with technology. In the Chinatown battle, Peter took advantage of Chi-You's focus on Casey Jones and got into position with the Proton Bazooka. Peter blew Chi-You up and gave Raphael the opening he needed to shock Casey and restore him to normal.

Peter helped fend off the Thralls (and dodge another one of Janine's pay raise demands) then wrangled Chi-You with Winston... but they were both wedged in the doorway to the R&D Laboratory. Leonardo came up behind them and secured a Trap. Chi-You had other plans. Peter used a lighter to pierce the dark and it was revealed Chi-You possessed Winston. As Leonardo and Raphael engaged Chi-You, Peter pointed Michelangelo to a Slime Blower kept in the Ecto-1 downstairs. Once the Turtles separated Chi-You from Winston, Peter trapped him. Peter radioed Egon to make sure nothing got blown up in the basement. Once the Turtles, Casey, and April returned home, Peter opened the floor to whoever wanted to deposit Chi-You into the Containment Unit. Winston had other ideas and elected to throw the Trap into the interdimensional portal to the edge of the universe.

The Ghostbusters returned to the Firehouse from a case and discovered parallel versions of themselves let Slimer loose by accident but retrapped him. They talked. Peter recalled prior experience with other dimensions and told them about the time they were kidnapped by the Collectors and when they met the Turtles. He admitted it was the first time they met alternate versions of themselves and joked they should have goatees. Peter and Winston investigated the Bronx Zoo with the alternate Ray Stantz and Egon Spengler. Peter and Ray searched the Heins & LaFarge Zoo Center but Ray was entranced by the Fairy Poltergeist. Peter called the others for help. When the poltergeist revealed its true form, Peter wrangled it but Ray was in danger of walking right into the proton stream. Winston tackled Ray out of the way while Egon trapped the entity. The parallel Egon realized it shared a spectography with the ghosts infesting New York City in his home dimension and theorized there might be a small dimensional nexus in their Containment Unit due to the storage of so much psychokinetic matter in one place. Peter interpreted that was a means to bill the parallel team. The parallel Peter countered they were getting a little variety and guaranteed work. Peter became irritated and wanted to punch out his counterpart. Peter consulted with the Egons first to check if such a thing wouldn't break the universe. Winston held Peter back.

During an investigation in Staten Island, the Ghostbusters encountered the Sandman. He was forced into a dream state. Peter's dream was about the night he spent with the possessed Dana Barrett in her old apartment on Central Park West during the Gozer incident. However, Ray suddenly appeared in Dana's place after Peter hung up the phone. Ray quickly explained what happened to them. Peter asked how to get out of the dream and Ray threw him out the window. They arrived in Winston's dream, about his wedding to Tiyah at the Loeb Boathouse. Winston became irate since the dream was the only place he didn't have to deal with them. The trio went through a door and found Egon in his dream. Once the Sandman revealed himself, the Ghostbusters visualized their equipment and attacked. Peter conjured the Proton Bazooka. Winston, Ray, and Peter were able to break down his barrier and destroyed his hourglass totem before he extracted one of Egon's eyes. Sandman dispersed and the Ghostbusters regained consciousness. Ray did some research and identified the entity as the Sandman.

When the Ghostbusters got a call from the United Nations Building, Peter was angry with having to cancel a reservation at a restaurant he waited a month and a half for.[11] He was not amused when his comrades suggested he take his date Julie to Gray's.[12] He debated the bill with a United Nations representative named Mr. Okonjo. Peter offered an installment plan but Okonjo believed the United Nations was covered by the municipal contract. Winston informed him the contract covered trapping and capture but nothing else unlike opening an account. Okonjo angrily ripped up the invoice. Erland Vinter intervened and paid the $15,000 invoice with a blank check. Vinter revealed he wanted to meet with the Ghostbusters on a new business opportunity and implored them to add the cost of consultation to the invoice. While Winston was suspicious, Peter declared he was still cashing the check. After Winston had someone run a background check on Vinter, nothing criminal came up. Even Peter admitted something weird was going on. A few days later, Vinter revealed he wanted to buy the Ghostbusters.

While Ray and Winston were against selling the company, Peter was more open to hearing the offer amount. However, Peck intervened and brought up the current municipal contract that made New York City to be seen first due to the high volume of ghost activity. Instead, he made a deal to loan the Ghostbuters for up to two weeks in a month. Peter confronted Peck after the meeting and told him they could have handled Vinter. Peck brought up their way of handling things would have no doubt made an enemy of Vinter and he salvaged the situation to benefit PCOC and stick it to the Ghostbusters.

The next week, the Ghostbusters were sent to Italy with Vinter's assistant Kaia May with the intention of clearing out Poveglia. Instead of Lido, they stayed in Venice for a few hours. Peter was eager to see one of the most beautiful cities in the world on someone else's dime. Ray didn't see the logic of it and took readings. Peter realized Ray was in a mood because Jenny Moran didn't come along. Peter left Ray to do some shopping. While he tried on masks, Peter encountered a Venetian Shop Ghost. She told him, "Devi Andare" (or "You must go") then threw him outside into the river. A gondola steersman pulled Peter onto his boat and translated what the ghost said. Back at the hotel, Peter told the others what happened.

Peter didn't warm up to the idea of cutting their stay in Paris short nor being kept in the dark about what Peck's case was about. At first, he thought Peck was the client but it was a family friend named Una O'Neill in County Clare, Ireland. Peter joked about being weirded out Peck had a family who had friends and thought he was hatched. After Una told her story, Peck assigned Kylie and Peter to seek out Aibell and negotiate on her behalf so she could pass on. Kylie located the entrance to Craig Liath and they entered uninvited. Upon hearing Aibell, Peter turned and fired in vain. Aibell revealed herself and admired his boldness. They explained they came to see her so she could lift her claim on Una. Aibell was intrigued then messed with Kylie, deducing they were sent to distract her while their allies tried to save the day. Peter was not impressed with the faux mind reading gimmick and wished someone would use fresh material for once. Aibell was amused and declared she liked Peter then said she could abandon her claim on Una if they promised to do her a favor in the future. Peter quickly agreed to the deal. Aibell teleported them to Una's property then forcibly released her Banshee from a Trap. Peter realized their car was left behind. Aibell bid Peter goodbye and left. Winston realized Peter did something that was going to cause them trouble later on. Kylie confirmed as much.

Out of everyone, Peter was the most nonchalant about Egon's apparent demise. He recalled how they were kidnapped and imprisoned in the Collectors' limbo a few years back. An unexpected voice of reason, Peter suggested they take the scientific approach and explore all the options before they made any conclusions about Egon. He volunteered Melanie and Kylie to search Egon's Apartment and left everyone to find out about the Rauoskinna while he went off to distract Janine by annoying her. They needed an Egon to read Egon's notes so Peter, Winston, and Janine used the teleportation unit to go to the dimension of the Ghostbusters they recently met. Peter hit on the parallel Janine while they waited for the guys to return to their Firehouse. Upon their return to their own dimension, Peter trapped a Granny Gross ghost that used the teleporter to cross over. Kaia issued new demands from Vinter to them, the Rauoskinna for Egon's restoration. Peter took the lead again and assigned Ray, Kylie and parallel Egon to sort out the list of locations of the key and map to the book, Melanie and Winston to work out logistics, Janine to call the Chicago Ghostbusters and request their aid in the search, and Jenny to inform PCOC of their plans. Peter went on the flight to Chiloe Island and ended up getting attacked by an Imbunche. To add insult to injury, the Imbunche fell on top of Peter after it was taken out with the Destabilizer.

The Ghostbusters and Loftur were accidentally teleported to Hell after Jenny read a spell from the Rauoskinna. Peter reveled in the sudden shift in Loftur's tone to desperation. As the Devil extracted Loftur's soul, he decided to let the Ghostbusters leave but refused to instruct them how without a contract. Everyone looked at Peter. Peter asked them to stop. He immediately vetoed Ray's idea to jury-rig a calculated protonic reversal since it would open a direct route from Hell to New York. Instead, they relied on Hell lore and followed the River Styx to its endpoint. They entered an ice cavern. Peter tucked the Rauoskinna in his flightsuit before he started climbing down the giant representation of the Devil. Aibell teleported them to Craig Liath after sensing the book's power. She called in the favor Peter owed her and asked for the book. She restored Egon back to life as a token of good faith. Peter complied and gave her the book, only for Jenny to destroy it. Jenny was vaporized as she threw a tantrum. She grabbed Peter and accused him of cheating her out of her favor. Peter pointed out he handed her the book. Aibell was at a loss for words and threw Peter on the Egons. She angrily sent them back to Central Park. They watched as Jenny manifested as a ghost and reaffirmed her love of Ray. Peter mused Ray had a type after all. The next day, they analyzed Egon and asked him what he remembered. Egon recalled it felt like Heaven to get close to solving the Riemann Hypothesis. Peter reckoned Heaven would be a day without any cases. Janine triggered the alarm and notified them of a case in the Bronx. Peter admitted it was his fault for jinxing it. Janine informed them a Mr. Shevlin reported a toilet ate his dog. Peter was hoping it was a Shih Tzu. Janine didn't indulge him.

Over course of gathering research for his book about the Ghostbusters, Erik spoke with Peter about the Scoleri Brothers case. Peter mentioned Winston was also there. While assessing a case in Iowa, Melanie ran into a hostile entity. She was unable to contract anyone from the Chicago Ghostbusters so she asked for Ray and Kylie. Peter showed up instead of Ray and starting things off with another Music Man reference. He inquired why Melanie didn't get the Chicago branch and where the best steak restaurant was. That night, Peter engaged the Ethan Alder manifestation and asked if it knew a good steak place. He easily wrangled it in a Proton Stream then Kylie and Melanie joined. He asked once more for a steak recommendation. Alder ecto projected on Peter. Unperturbed, Peter trapped him. In the fall, Peter and Ray were alerted by Janine of a theft of some equipment by her niece Cait Banner and her best friend Zoe Zawadzki. They drove to Bay Ridge and busted the girls and their friend Evan Torres after they trapped a female ghost. Zoe was surprised with Ray's offer to teach them how to be Ghostbusters. Peter informed it was still a "maybe" and it depended on how they handled a life-and-death situation -- apologizing to Janine.

Peter decided to play a prank on Egon, Ray, and Kylie at the Firehouse. He hid a walkie talkie behind the research tank. As Peter instructed them, the 101 class inquired about the origin of Slimer. Egon Spengler and Kylie Griffin acknowledged there was a lot of theories. They each talked about their theories then Ray found a passage in the revised Funder's Cults of the Northeast. Peter proceeded with his prank and pretended to be Slimer on the walkie. Slimer claimed he was once a king. Egon, Kylie, and Ray took the bait and scrambled to document what just happened. Peter told the teens they were perfect then thought of something else. Slimer confessed Ray gave him Egon's stash of snack cakes to see if they would digest differently. Egon wasn't happy. Peter was pleased and gave some money to the teens. During one of his exploratory trips to Dimension 35-N, Peter went to watch the undefeated New York Jets. A Class 5 manifested during the game but Peter watched as it was taken down by the Ghostbusters of Dimension 35-N, Household Spirits that took on appearances similar to the Ghostbusters and Slimer.

Peter and Winston confronted the ghost of Jonas Schultz on Coney Island while Egon and Ray investigated the sewers for the true source of the disturbance. Winston easily wrangled Jonas in a stream since it was focused on looking at the construct of Luna Park he manifested. Peter trapped him despite his objection. Egon and Ray discovered a pool of positively charged Psychomagnotheric Slime and tried to neutralize it but it erupted over the neighborhoods. One week later, Peck informed the Ghostbusters that the EPA was hitting them with a fine so large it would put them out of business. Peter chided him for not thinking out of the box and presented his idea for a fantasy camp inspired by Ray teaching Cait, Zoe, and Evan about ghostbusting. He proposed they set up an ionized glass playground and let customers shoot at a weak ghost with throttled equipment then charge a little more for those that showed promise and roll them into a recruiting program aimed at getting back to expansion. Peck was surprisingly intrigued and asked Peter to tell him more.

The idea was named "Ghostbusters 101" and a commercial was quickly filmed. Before it aired, Peter spoke with Dr. Carla Parker over the phone. He promised a potential spot in the 101 "pilot program," his term for Ray's teaching arrangement with Cait, Zoe, and Evan, and told her to stop by the Firehouse in the afternoon. Peter happened to be out on a call when Carla showed up with her son, Garrett Parker. The Ghostbusters returned later on and learned about how their students opened a portal with the teleportation unit and Garrett was almost pulled through. Ray remarked to Peter how he couldn't believe it wasn't secure. In another dimension, Kevin Beckman briefly saw Peter and Ray walking up the stairs of the Firehouse until Abby Yates got his attention. Kevin asked her if they knew anybody named "Venkman". A couple weeks later, twin Statues of Liberty appeared in New York Harbor. Peter, Winston, and Ray investigated and took readings. Peter took point and spoke to a NY1 News reporter in the afternoon. He told an anecdote about informing the Mayor they had nothing to do with the anomaly but were more than happy to get to the bottom of it for a reasonable fee. Peter then addressed the people nearby and asked "Who Ya Gonna Call?" Back at the Firehouse, an alternate team of Ghostbusters had arrived after they saw the news report. The two teams gathered on the second floor. Abby was still bugged by a nagging feeling the others looked familiar. Peter stated they were the world famous Ghostbusters. Abby angrily countered they were the Ghostbusters and were operating for well over year. She stopped to ask Egon what he was doing. Ray explained it was part and parcel of what they did when they encountered those from another dimension. The discussion moved downstairs to the basement. After Jillian Holtzmann then Peter joked at his expense, Ray noted the readings of the Statues of Liberty matched the readings taken when the 101 pilot team used the teleportation unit. It was determined their dimensions were overlapping.

On the ride to Ellis Island, Peter asked if they ever tried Adderall with Jillian Holtzmann. Patty admitted they didn't slow her down a bit. Peter joked that wasn't any kind of concern. Ray remembered going to a dimension where someone who looked like Peter blew up an entire golf course. Peter denied he would ever do that. Erin Gilbert started to panic after it became clear Winston looked like Uncle Bill, Peter looked like Martin Heiss, and Ray looked like the Cabbie. Peter reminded her he was a trained psychologist. Peter gave Patty Tolan one of their Proton Packs and warned her about the recoil. Peter, Winston, Patty, and Holtzmann were left to "restrain" the Megaspook Jr. amalgamation while Erin and Ray ran back to Marine Ecto-8. Erin weakened it with the Proton Bazooka then Ray captured it with the rigged Megatrap then swung it into the dimensional tear above the island. The resulting explosion closed the breach. Peter went along with Winston, Patty, and Holtzmann to a call from the Bronx. He was surprised Holtzmann still had energy after about a dozen busts in two days. He admittedly didn't know too much about the history of Woodlawn Cemetery like Patty or Ray did. The ghost of Herman Melville ran past them with a grave warning. The name sounded familiar to Peter, to Patty's annoyance. The Moby Dick Ghost arrived and slimed them. Patty exclaimed Melville wrote "Moby Dick" but he thought that was John Bonham. Peter, Winston, and Patty were unable to wrangle the ghost but Holtzmann reappeared and lured it into an ambush. She remotely activated several Traps and captured it. Peter got tired of her "old" cracks and noticed some grays in her blonde hair.

After Ray briefed a group of 101 Cadets about sliming Ley Lines near Washington Square Arch, Peter arrived in Ecto-1 to pick him up. Peter announced to the cadets they were offering them a 10% off coupon for their next 101 experience but it was only good through the end of the year and worth double on Thursdays. They took their standby positions on a roof opposite another team. As Ray spoke to them on comms, Peter added to warn them about birds. Winston sighed and confirmed he copied. The ghost was pulled through to their dimension and captured. They crossed the streams to seal it and separate their dimensions. Two weeks later, Peter and Ray visited the other dimension to rebuild their Containment Unit as the latter promised. He shot the breeze with Patty while Ray did the work. Peter admitted he was thinking about handing out teleportation units as they could come in handy. He joked they could have a hell of a bowling league if they could avoid blowing up the universe first. Rebecca Gorin found that extremely unlikely. Peter instantly saw she was Dana Barrett's doppelganger but still couldn't believe it. Holtzmann introduced the two to each other. Peter asked her if she was ever turned into a dog. Gorin replied she never experimented with those sorts of pharmaceuticals. Peter and Gorin joked about the 'other kinds.'

Peter wrangled the H2 Ghost on Lexington Avenue after Ray doused half of it and its intended target, a busineswoman then Winston trapped it. Back at Ecto-1, Winston admitted he was burnt out from the extra workload. Ray agreed and wished for another big adventure like when they were manipulated by Loftur. Peter stated he needed professional help and offered his services with a discount. Ray passed. As they drove to Murray Hill for the next call, Ray reminded them again how uncoupling the two dimensions allowed some ghosts to pop through to their plane and cause a busier than usual period. Peter recalled he told them enough times. Despite Peter's warning, Winston wondered aloud if the insulation between dimensions was Purgatory. Ray got wound up and got excited at the prospect of finding out someday. Winston and Peter were called up for a meeting to figure out the next course of action after Donatello came for help only to be grabbed by the Collectors. Despite the individuals involved, Ray found it practically absurd someone sent the Collectors after the Turtles. Peter blamed it all on Ray for wanting another adventure.

Over the next three weeks, Egon and Ray invented Remote Portal Access Bands and modified two Experimental Mental Communications Devices. Ray, Peter, and Winston suited up and headed through the Interspatial Teleportation Unit's portal to the Collectors' Limbo and reunited with the Turtles. Ray instructed Donatello to put on the second Mental Communications Device then go through the portal where Egon would fill him in then told the others to hold off in following. In order to slow down the Collectors and buy time, each Ghostbuster paired up with a Turtle and went on their on track making random hops to various dimensions. Peter and Michelangelo teamed up. Peter activated his band. They emerged from the portal in a new dimension near a rather foreboding castle.

Peter and Michelangelo crossed over into Zoo Amsterdam. In need of time to send a message to Egon and time to let the Remote Portal Access Band charge, Peter suggested they do some sight seeing. Michelangelo was eager to check out the city but Peter stopped him, having noticed all of the inhabitants were anthropomorphic animals who wore clothes. He lent Michelangelo his flight suit. Michelangelo's exuberance dropped after a chance encounter with a parallel version of his father Splinter. Michelangelo explained what happened and how they had a falling out but he missed his father. He suddenly hugged Peter. Peter relented and implored him to let it all out. They settled on a park bench and Michelangelo quickly explained feudal Japan, the Shredder and the Foot Clan, Splinter's takeover, and the falling out the Turtles had with Splinter. Peter realized Michelangelo had an ideal image of his father in his head and he soon stopped resembling it. Peter put his degree to use and told Michelangelo that parents were people, too, and made mistakes and children reacted badly to it. He didn't promise he would understand or forgive Splinter but eventually he would understand him. Michelangelo was surprised Peter had something helpful to say. Peter explained he had a degree in psychology, but it was mostly to impress women with. Peter recognized the neighborhood and realized they were about a block away from where the Firehouse would be. Suddenly, the Ghostbusturtles arrived and mistook Peter for an extra-normal entity. They decided to shoot first and make the final determination later. Before Peter could fully process what they said, they opened fire on him.

The Ghostbusturtles wrangled Peter in their streams. Bill congratulated everyone for saving the young turtle and asked for someone to restrain Peter for transport. Dan stepped up and wrapped Peter up in Incapacitating Gel. As they carried Peter to the Turtle Van, Harold found him to be heavy and bemoaned that it happened to be the day Ernie called in sick. Michelangelo tried to explain Peter wasn't what they thought but Dan reassured him Peter was some kind of alien hellbeast then explained they were going to consult with City Hall, atomize him, and store him safely. Dan told Michelangelo there was no need to thank them then the Ghostbusturtles departed. Michelangelo mused he could easily take them out and rescue Peter but concluded they were innocent bystanders. He utilized his ninja training and tailed the van to the Ghostbusturtles' Firehouse. Peter was placed on a table in the basement and left alone. As he contemplated what to do next, Peter was startled when Michelangelo revealed himself. Michelangelo couldn't pry out of the gel. Bill and Harold found Michelangelo and opened fire, thinking Peter compromised his mind. Michelangelo easily dodged the streams. Harold was aghast with the lab getting wrecked. Michelangelo had enough. Michelangelo told them he was a trained ninja and could drop them without breaking a sweat then simply dropped his nunchuks to the ground. Bill admitted he wasn't ready for that move. Harold assumed the demon's hold was waning and elected Dan to talk to him. Dan demanded the entity to release its hold on Michelangelo and make itself visible. Listening to Dan, Peter realized he was an analogue of Ray. Michelangelo explained neither of them were ghosts. They were just visitors from another world. Harold advised Dan not to trust them since aliens didn't exist. Michelangelo clarified they were from two different dimensions on the run from something bad. Michelangelo concluded they were good people otherwise they would have taken out Peter from the start. Peter pointed out it was red tape that saved him. Michelangelo noticed none of them had their fingers on their triggers anymore then implored them to look at what was on Peter's back as further proof he was telling the truth. Harold realized it was a Proton Pack. Dan followed his gut and believed Michelangelo. But they ran a series of scans to verify it completely and took samples. As they walked out of the Firehouse, Dan apologized but Michelangelo understood they were doing their job and it was okay to be safe than sorry. Peter disagreed on their definitions of "okay" but complimented Michelangelo on talking them out of trouble rather than using violence. He asked Michelangelo if he ever thought about getting a Psychology degree. Michelangelo didn't see how he could take classes on account of being a mutant. Peter joked he met some of Winston's night school classmates and doubted Michelangelo would stand out. He opened a breach and they left. Bill was relieved they were gone because Peter gave him the creeps.

Michelangelo exited the portal into a Garden Dimension and crashed into Raphael, whose good mood evaporated. He yelled at Michelangelo to get off him. Peter then Leonardo and Winston then Donatello arrived. Peter chided Ray for trying to scan Tang Shen while she and her sons reunited. He was amused when Ray was shut down when Tang Shen gave him a look as he over-explained the function of the Experimental Mental Communications Device. She continued on and later thanked the Ghostbusters for being loyal friends and worthy examples of character to her children when they needed it the most. Peter told her she was welcome and complimented her "whole Mikado thing" but got a look from her, too. After Tang Shen warned them the enemy was closing in then disappeared, Peter opened a breach back to the Firehouse with his access band.

After Egon deduced the odds were in favor that the Collectors would manifest in Central Park, Peter served as the distraction. He noted they looked different, due to their unexpected merging with Darius Dun, and gave them to chance to surrender. Darius was amused and laughed. He revealed he would end the Ghostbusters after Turtles then he would build an eternal criminal empire across the multiverse. Peter found him "full-tilt bugnuts." Leonardo sliced the green Collector in half at the torso with his Proton Swords. They were surprised to feel pain but vowed to destroy them. The Turtles and Darius fought. Peter and Winston later came to the Turtles' aid and opened fire on two of the Collectors. Darius recalled the Collectors could not be contained by the Ghostbusters and underestimated the Trap-Gate. He vowed to escape. Egon pointed out it wasn't like the Traps. All four were drawn through the Trap-Gate's portal into the Containment Unit. As the Turtles prepared to head home to their dimension, Peter gave Michelangelo a copy of "A Beginner's Guide to Psychology". Michelangelo was stoked. Peter told him to pay him back when he figured out how to make a living.

The Ghostbusters were called to investigate City Water Tunnel No. 3. Egon wanted to study the box in the side cavern and where it came from. Peter informed them of an entity hovering above them. Ray tried to communicate but it warned him against giving his name away so freely and vanished. A swarm of Bat Spectral Constructs poured out of the side cavern where the ghost was held. They took the elevator but they got slimed. Later in the day, Winston nor Peter didn't answer a summons so Ron and Kylie went in their place. As a result of being in direct contact with Connla when it was dispersed, a latent mental link was forged. In the few days before Connla's reconstitution, Kylie had a precognitive dream about her and the four original Ghostbusters encountering Connla's Army. Connla declared the veil to the other side would open permanently, more armies would come, and night would last forever. She awoke and went to the Firehouse to share details of the dream with the others. Egon noticed strange readings picked up by the Dream Analyzer Helmet but lied to her they were normal to assuage her fears. Kylie admitted she felt physical sensations during the dream. Egon asserted no matter what, they took dreams seriously. Peter contended he never took his seriously. Janine added they all learned that lesson already. Peter brought up the ghost had an Irish accent and hinted at a connection to Kylie like with Janine and the Draguar. Egon doubted it. Kylie revealed her great-grandfather chose her family's surname when he immigrated to America because it had a good ring to it. She realized something and ran off to double check her theory. Janine yelled out to leave the helmet on the front desk. She signed and reckoned Ray had too much of an influence on her. Peter thought Egon was more to blame. With knowledge of the army coming, Egon went to work preparing for the possibility. He dug out a Remote Portal Access Band from a box. As Kylie trapped Connla, Winston was surprised to see his ghosts try to pull him out. He and Peter threw out their Traps and helped finish capturing Connla. After Egon summoned help from other dimensions to trap all of Connla's army, Patty pointed out the Statue of Liberty got scorched. Peter was sure they could smooth it out.

On Halloween, Melanie, Peter, and Kylie arrived at the Salem Witch Museum at 6 pm. As they approached the museum, the Witch Museum Ghost manifested again. Peter tried to distract her by talking while Melanie got into position to throw a Trap but she put both of them on trial. Wooden stakes came out of the ground and grabbed them. They kept talking to the ghost while Kylie approached. The ghost got irritated and found them guilty. The stakes lit on fire. Kylie trapped the ghost and shot them down. Peter and Melanie suffered first and minor second degree burns below the knee. Peter, Winston, and Kylie responded to a call from Tai Hong Lau Restuarant. They and the owner hid behind some propped up tables while Phyllis Hasskamp threw several cooked ducks their way. She proclaimed "No stars!" repeatedly. Peter opened fire but Hasskamp went through the floor and the proton stream nailed a table. The owner yanked on his arm and asked him to stop damaging his restaurant because they just remodeled but Peter insisted she moved. Winston ushered him away from them. Peter used himself as bait and pretended to love the food. He picked a spring roll off a plate and declared it was good, had subtle smoky flavor, and there was not too much garlic then claimed he would recommend Tai Hong Lau to everyone and they would listen because he was a celebrity. Hasskamp took the bait and reappeared. She countered the food was uninspired, almost inedible, and not even fit for a dog then sent more food in the air with telekinesis. Winston and Kylie captured her. Her last words was a request they just eat somewhere better. Peter spit the food out and admitted Hasskamp was right. When they returned to the Firehouse, Jenny informed them Janine was out taking a meeting. Peter was surprised he didn't know Janine met with people. Winston reminded Peter that she did more than he he ever wanted to know about and didn't know what they would do without her then tricked Peter into going to the basement to deposit the Trap to clear his mind while he went to get lunch. Peter noticed a note left on the interdimensional technology by Ray not to touch because a diagnostic was being run. Peter went to deposit the Trap and it just so happened Ron and Holtzmann tested their Remote Access Teleportation Unit at the same time and triggered the Interspatial Teleportation Unit. Peter went to turn it off but the basement was suddenly enveloped in a white flash.

Peter was taken to a hospital a few blocks away. He was technically in a coma, but doctors believed he would come out of it. While he lay unconscious in his room, an entity took advantage of the situation to make easy contact. Peter found himself on the mental plane and realized it was looking like the time he was possessed by the Hungry Manitou. The entity spoke and wondered if he meant "re-possessed" but Peter replied he didn't swing at softballs. He asked who said that. A familiar looking door manifested. With no other choice, he entered and found himself in a kitchen that resembled Dana Barrett's from 550 Central Park West. The entity even took on the appearance of Dana. Peter admitted it wasn't what he expected but immediately noticed the entity got one detail wrong: Dana didn't do broccoli. The entity stated it was just trying put him at ease before the main conversation. Jenny Moran sensed something was engaging Peter. She entered the mental plane and jumped the entity. Jenny yelled at Peter to run but Peter pointed out he had nowhere to run to. The entity tossed Jenny and explained it was just trying to pass along a warning. It added he was in danger and quizzed him on the nature of a spectral entity -- ghosts, gods, demons, creatures that exist only in dreams -- and how they were all the same thing but different. Peter realized it was like Ray's Spirit Guide. The entity startled Peter by taking on that guide's wardrobe and a gut. It admitted it was sort of like the guide. Peter thought it was getting a little weird even for him. The entity pointed out he studied Parapsychology for an easy second Ph.D and wrote a paper on the theory of Werewolf Gladiators in Atlantis. Peter insisted that was all a load of crap.

The guide walked to the "refrigerator" and continued. She spoke of individuals that were born and existed as a "mass of psychokinetic energy" and nothing more but weren't gods or monsters with no aim to destroy or haunt. Then it hinted these individuals had their predators. It opened the "refrigerator" door. It warned those predators had a vested interest in keeping the Ghostbusters from becoming a permanent interdimensional presence or they would affect the balance and create chaos. Peter asked it to wait but it pushed him through. Before Jenny left of her own volition, she told the entity she found the warning too convenient because it was exactly the kind of thing that the Ghostbusters would believe in: a prophecy, a conspiracy, and a complex situation involving monsters in the dark. The entity asked why it would give Peter the runaround. Jenny admitted she didn't know but was going to find out. Peter came to, back in his body, surrounded by the other Ghostbusters. He told them about the warning but realized it was real vague and full of a lot of unnecessary details, like a con job. He suggested they limit their studies of the multiverse but Egon briefed him on the issue of missing entities and the Containment Unit being on the brink of structural collapse. During a meeting two days later, time travel was asked about. Ray and Egon denied the teleporation had that component but Janine whistled and yelled at everyone to shut up and start listening. Peter noted they once met their future selves in a stairwell. Janine smacked him. Some time later, Peter signaled the end of the meeting and the start of the retrieval missions with a warning to be careful since they don't know what they're walking into. Unbeknownst to anyone, Tiamat was watching them from her dimension. She laughed and remarked truer words were never spoken. On November 13, Peter went to Portland, Maine with Melanie and Ray in response to a mass trance initiated by Saint Pippy.

Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime

Due to the supernatural activity caused by the Relic of Nilhe, Peter is smitten with the Ghostbusters' bank account soaring. But the rest of the team is exhausted. At Ray's suggestion, rookies are brought in. Peter is against it, as he notes they smell, eat all the leftovers, and have to be paid. However, the junior team surprises him and solves the latest threat to New York, Dumazu. During the victory celebration, he trades quips with Bridget Gibbons, whom he shares several personality traits with.

Animated Series

After the fall of Gozer, Peter and the other Ghostbusters fixed up the Firehouse after it was severely damaged by the escaping ghosts. Upon the completion of the Firehouse, the Ghostbusters adopted the green ghost who had slimed Peter (now known as Slimer) as a pet mascot. Though Peter at first wouldn't forgive the little ghost for their encounter at the hotel, he soon grew to love him like the rest of the Ghostbusters.

Trivia

  • Peter Venkman was originally intended to be played by Dan Aykroyd's friend, John Belushi, with whom Aykroyd worked on The Blues Brothers. However, Belushi died of a drug overdose before the film's pre-production. Slimer was described by Aykroyd as "The Ghost of John Belushi".
  • After Belushi's death and before Bill Murray was attached to the role, Michael Keaton and Chevy Chase were linked to the role of Peter.[13]
  • Bill Murray is rumored to have ad-libbed his dialog heavily but they were mostly scripted.[14]
    • Peter's slip about checking out Dana was ad-libbed by Murray.[15]
    • Peter quickly professing his love for Dana was Murray's idea.[16]
  • Peter's lecherous behavior was dialed back after Bill Murray and Sigourney Weaver's on-set dynamics were observed.[17][18]
  • This is also one of the films often cited as Murray's best comedic performance.
  • For a long time, Murray refused to perform in any trilogies of any film
  • Bill Murray played Peter Venkman in the live Ghostbusters films while Lorenzo Music played Peter Venkman in the animated series. Music also played Garfield in the Garfield animated series, while Murray played Garfield in the live action films.
  • According to the novelization, Peter put himself through college working as a hawker at Coney Island, where he honed his skill in fast talking.
  • In Ghostbusters: The Supernatural Spectacular, Peter entered the study of parapsychology because grant money was readily available and the study of ESP was in its infant stage (and thus, results could be made up).[19] Peter was a carnival barker during his summers away from college.[20] Peter was born on the lot of King City Attractions, in a tent, on a field, in Sedalia, Missouri. He went to school in Iowa City but the family circus toured through the Corn Belt states. He wanted to go to college but couldn't state why to his father.[21]
  • Peter has degrees in parapsychology and psychology. Peter makes more use out of his psychology degree as evidenced by the ease with which he can smooth talk people towards his own ends. If Ray is the heart of the Ghostbusters, Peter is the mouth.
  • Peter seems to regard his status as a doctor and scientist primarily as something to flaunt and impress people with. Some are fairly skeptical about it due to his decidedly unprofessional demeanor. Dana in particular said he was more like a game show host than a scientist. Peter himself regards other scientists as usually being pretty stiff.
  • Peter's line, "Back off, man, I'm a scientist," became a popular slogan after the movie was released. Later it was changed (for children's t-shirts and other memorabilia) to, "I'm a (Real) Ghostbuster."

  • In the August 5, 1988 and February 27, 1989 versions of the Ghostbusters II script, during the epilogue scene, Peter reveals he's "a little of everything" - some Irish, German, French and Dutch. He adds the women in his family slept around.[30][31]
  • Peter Griffin, television patriarch to the animated series "Family Guy" wears Venkman's uniform with "Peter" on the name tag. He gag references Dana Barrett/Zuul in the cut away scene to 2007's "Road to Rupert."
  • His character model in the Ghostbusters: Video Game struts when walking while the other Ghostbusters including the Rookie simply walk.

Harold Ramis says: "In essence, that translated into one character being hipper and more verbal than the others -- more of a huckster, the salesman of the team -- someone who is weak on the technical side and probably didn't do all that well in school, but is smart enough to have hooked up with guys more intelligent than he is. That, of course, was Bill's character."

Paragraph reads: "Much of Venkman's dialogue sounds so characteristically 'Bill Murray' that many viewers and film critics simply assumed he had written or ad-libbed his own lines. In actuality, most of them were scripted for him."
  15. Shay, Don (November 1985). Making Ghostbusters, p. 56 annotation. New York Zoetrope, New York NY USA, ISBN 0918432685. Harold Ramis says: "While much of the dialogue is different, the mechanics of the scene are the same. The same hooks are there. Usually, you have a relationship that grows through a film and, by the end, the characters say, 'I love you.' But Bill came up with the idea of this guy just blowing it all right up front."
