Randy Lofficier with uncredited husband Jean-Marc Lofficier co-wrote The Real Ghostbusters episodes "The Ghostbusters in Paris" and "The Headless Motorcyclist".

About[]

Ghostbusters Related[]

Jean-Marc and Randy Lofficier wrote an article about Ghostbusters for the June 1984 edition of "American Cinematographer." They were commissioned to do the article six months before the movie came out. They conducted interviews for three months, including László Kovács and members of the special effects team. They did not get to see the movie for the article. Instead, they only got to read a draft.[1]

Jean-Marc and Randy Lofficier pitched premises to J. Michael Straczynski in the form of one page story summaries. Straczynski liked "The Headless Motorcyclist" and commissioned an outline. There were few changes and it went to script fairly quickly. "The Ghostbusters in Paris" was approved next.[2]

Trivia[]

  • Harlan Ellison loved "The Ghostbusters in Paris" and called in to say he loved the premise and how the problem was resolved.[3]
  • Jean-Marc and Randy Lofficier tried to do a third episode of The Real Ghostbusters and J. Michael Straczynski liked some ideas they pitched but they ran out of time and the show ended.[4]

We hadn't seen the movie; just read the script — not even a final version, no doubt...If memory serves he was a bit more "maniacal" on the printed page...Nice elderly gentleman. We interviewed the entire special FX crew. Some of the stuff that didn’t find its way in American Cinematographer was used in Starburst in the UK and L'Ecran Fantastique in France."

I forgot if the fist one he liked was "The Headless Motorcyclist" — I think it was. "Ghostbusters in Paris" came next. Anyway, once Joe liked a premise, he then commissioned an outline. From that point on, you got a contract and were guaranteed to be paid. After he approved the outline — if I recall, there were very few changes — then we went to script. That was it. Very simple."

Proton Charging "Interview: Jean-Marc Lofficier" 10/9/1998 Jean-Marc Lofficier says: "I remember that after that one first aired — in the afternoon in Los Angeles — we immediately, like within five minutes of the credits rolling, got a call from Harlan Ellison to congratulate us on the premise — and the way we resolved the situation. One of the producers, Michael Gross, told us it as one of his favorite shows and even apologized because the subcontracting studio that was assigned to it in the Orient (they were using like 4 different Asian studios) sort of botched it up."
