The Key [1] is an ancient key said to be the only way The Collector could free himself from his fortress in the Land of Lost Objects. [2]

History

After 10,000 years of searching, The Collector decided he was going to steal every single thing from the physical plane in order to find the Key. It turned out the key was kept in the Zeddemore family for centuries [3] and was split in half. Edward Zeddemore and Winston Zeddemore kept one half each and wore it on a simple necklace. After Winston's was revealed in a battle between the Ghostbusters and Collector, the Collector immediately recognized it. Ed believed in the Collector's story and after conferring with Winston, gave his half to the Collector. The Collector combined the halves then placed them into the vault behind his throne. The vault door opened, revealing a portal. The Collector kept the Key and had everyone and everything sent back to the physical plane. [4]

Trivia

  • On the Regular Cover of Ghostbusters: Get Real Issue #4, half of the Key makes a non-canon cameo in prime Winston's possession.
    • The half of the Key seen was the one owned by the animated Winston until he gave it to The Collector.
